"I was used to hard work, I was brought up on a dairy farm and when I got in high school, I got very, very active in basketball and cheerleading and tap dancing and ballroom dancing. You name it, I guess I did it. And then I got involved a lot in waterskiing because we only live four miles from Lake Champlain, and we had a water ski club."

LEADIN:
Forget knitting and cake-baking, 84-year-old Florence Meiler is a competitive pole vaulter.
She's in training in her home state of Vermont for an international track and field competition.
STORYLINE:
Florence "Flo" Filion Meiler is training hard.
She's practising for the World Masters Athletics Championships Indoor, where she'll be competing in a range of disciplines including the long jump, the 60-meter hurdles and the 800-meter run, as well as the five-event-in-one-day pentathlon.
But her favourite event is the pole vault.
Meiler, who's been training at the University of Vermont indoor track, won't have any competition there.
She'll be the only one in her age group for the sport where she reigns supreme. She set pole-vaulting records at ages 70, 75 and 80, when she did a 6-foot vault at an outdoor event.
She says she still enjoys competing.
"It's challenging. You really have to work at that. You have to have the upper core and you have to have timing and I just love it because it's challenging."
Meiler, who grew up on a dairy farm where she helped her father with daily chores, says she's used to hard work.
Her coach Emmaline Berg can't help but be proud.
"She's incredibly serious about what she does," she says.
"She comes in early to make sure she's warmed up enough. She goes home and stretches a lot. So, she pretty much structures her entire life around being a fantastic athlete which is remarkable at any age let alone hers."
Meiler got involved in sport at high school.
"I got very, very active in basketball and cheerleading and tap dancing and ballroom dancing," she says.
"You name it, I guess I did it. And then I got involved a lot in waterskiing because we only live four miles from Lake Champlain, and we had a water ski club."
She and her husband, who lived in Florida for a time, later competed in the sport.
Twenty-five years ago, at the age of 59, she took up track athletics.
She was competing in tennis doubles with her husband at the Vermont Senior Games, when she was encouraged to try the long jump - because competitors were needed.
Meiler turns 85 in June, when she heads to the National Senior Games in New Mexico. That puts her in a new age group where she hopes to set new records.
Athletes aged 35 and over can compete in the World Masters Athletics, which has male and female competitions in 5 year age groups.
