2. SOUNDBITE (English) Trisha Yearwood, recording artist, on coming up with the idea of a Frank Sinatra tribute record:
"And so I always want to make a standards record. And a lot of people have made standards records so I was trying to figure out how to make it not … how to make it different. And I was invited to sing at this 100th birthday celebration for Sinatra that the Grammys did a few years ago. And I sang, 'I'll Be Seeing You,' which is on the record. And Don Was was the musical director and after the performance, he said 'Have you ever thought about doing a record of this?' I'm like, 'Yes I think about it a lot. Would you, would you be interested in doing it together?' and he said yes. And so that sort of was like, OK, here's the guy. Here's the way to focus all these standards that everybody has recorded into something really tangible and cool, which is Frank because Frank is the coolest."

4. SOUNDBITE (English) Trisha Yearwood, recording artist, on why she didn't want it to sound like a country record:
"I did think before I entered the studio that I didn't want the musicians or Don or Vincent Mendoza, the arranger, to approach this in any way to be Sinatra goes country. That was not my intent at all. I did want it to be a standards record that stood on its own. But I didn't think, how do I need to change my voice? I think just the nature of the songs, you just sing them a little bit differently."

6. SOUNDBITE (English) Trisha Yearwood, recording artist, on writing a new song with Garth Brooks:
"But probably I think it was about a year before this project, I came home with a title. And I said – Garth's the writer. He hates it when I say this, that I'm not really the writer but he is in all of the songwriting Hall of Fames there are. So he's the guy. And I tend to be, if it's easy, I'll do it. But if it's hard and songwriting just doesn't come that easy to me, then I just don't focus on it. But I had this title and I came home and I said, 'I have this title: For The First Time I'm In Love For The Last Time, and I don't know what it is or why I have it.' And he started singing this melody that sounded like it was from another era. I mean it didn't sound like anything I've ever heard him do."

8. SOUNDBITE (English) Trisha Yearwood, recording artist, on singing swing songs:
"Yeah, that was really fun. And I will say that I was … They were harder to sing. The swing songs were harder to sing than the ballads. Because there is a real, there's a real art to singing a swing tune. It's … I said earlier, it was stream of consciousness and I have not said it in an interview. But I said, it's kind of channeling your inner Willie Nelson because you've got to be on the back beat of it, but you can't be too far back. But if you sing right on it, it just doesn't work. That was the only real advice, cause I was nervous about that. And Don Was was great because he was like, 'Don't overthink it. Just relax. It's a conversation. Lay it back and let it flow.' And he was great about that. That was what I needed to hear."

STORYLINE:
TRISH YEARWOOD CHANNELS SINATRA ON 'LET'S BE FRANK'
Country star Trisha Yearwood has always loved singing Frank Sinatra tunes in her live show, like "Somewhere Over the Rainbow," but she didn't want to make a country version of his songs.
Yearwood teamed up with acclaimed producer Don Was, who has worked with artists like Bob Dylan and the Rolling Stones for "Let's Be Frank," a tribute album to Old Blue Eyes, out on Friday (15 FEB. 2019).
"I did think before I entered the studio that I didn't want the musicians or Don or Vincent Mendoza, the arranger, to approach this in any way to be Sinatra goes country," Yearwood said. "That was not my intent at all. I did want it to be a standards record that stood on its own. But I didn't think, how do I need to change my voice? I think just the nature of the songs, you just sing them a little bit differently."
She said the toughest songs to sing were the swing-tempo songs like, "Come Fly With Me," because the rhythm was different than she was used to singing.
"The swing songs were harder to sing than the ballads," Yearwood said. "Because there is a real, there's a real art to singing a swing tune. It's … I said earlier, it was stream of consciousness and I have not said it in an interview. But I said, it's kind of channeling your inner Willie Nelson because you've got to be on the back beat of it, but you can't be too far back. But if you sing right on it, it just doesn't work."
But it's not just Sinatra songs. Yearwood and husband Garth Brooks added a special song they wrote together that fits the feel of the album.
"I came home and I said, 'I have this title: For The First Time I'm In Love For The Last Time, and I don't know what it is or why I have it,'" Yearwood recalls. "And he started singing this melody that sounded like it was from another era. I mean it didn't sound like anything I've ever heard him do."
Yearwood said that she's also currently working on a country album and planning for a live duets album with Brooks sometime in the coming year.
