STORYLINE:
The newly elected head of the independent Ukrainian Orthodox Church officially assumed office in Kiev on Sunday, a month after the church severed its centuries-long ties with the Russian Orthodox Church.
Metropolitan Epiphanius I, aged 40, was enthroned during a lavish service at St. Sophia Cathedral in the centre of the Ukrainian capital.
President Petro Poroshenko, who is running for re-election in the country's March 31 presidential race, and his arch-rival Yulia Tymoshenko, both attended the ceremony.
Peroshenko told Epiphanius that the Ukrainian people had "huge expectations" of him.
The Church in Ukraine has been under the formal jurisdiction of the Russian Orthodox Church since the 1600s.
But late last year, the Constantinople Patriarchy granted permission for the Ukrainian Orthodox Church to break away, mirroring the political split between Kiev and Moscow.
A spokesman for the Russian Orthodox Church on Sunday dismissed the Kiev ceremony as a "pathetic spectacle."
