3. SOUNDBITE (Mandarin) Lu Kang, China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson:
"We have noticed that Mr. Bolton made a series of erroneous remarks on a series of issues such as the South China Sea, the Confucius Institute, information security, and normal personnel exchanges without giving any conclusive evidence. His groundless remarks against China aim to serve the US's own self-interest and even political plots. China will by no means accept it."

5. SOUNDBITE (Mandarin) Lu Kang, China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson:
"We believe that most members of the international community can also make independent judgments on various cases, including the case of Meng Wanzhou you just mentioned. The world has seen it very clearly that relevant sides threatened other countries' enterprises, suppressed competitors, disturbed the market environment and even damaged and obstructed international cooperation in the science and technology industry with unfair means. It is a vile and severe political issue. China has repeatedly stated its solemn position. We once again urge the US government to immediately withdraw the arrest warrant and extradition request for Ms. Meng Wanzhou. We also urge the Canadian side to immediately release Ms. Meng Wanzhou and let her return to China safely."

"Relevant people in the United States should not expect other countries to be willing to sacrifice their own legitimate development rights, and to cater to the US's own self-interest and even some political plots."

9. SOUNDBITE (Mandarin) Lu Kang, China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson:
"In fact, for some time, more and more people from all over the world have shown an increasingly fair attitude toward the participation of Chinese technology companies in 5G construction. The US should not be uncomfortable about this. Instead, it should recognize that all countries have legitimate rights to develop themselves. I believe most countries are able to decide their policies independently."

11. SOUNDBITE (Mandarin) Lu Kang, China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson:
"Since 2017, he has repeatedly engaged in activities that endanger China's national security with holding a private passport and business visa. This is the fundamental reason why compulsory measures were imposed by China's national security department. The relevant parties are now often spreading the idea that he is a former diplomat in an attempt to confuse the international community. This is futile."

13. SOUNDBITE (Mandarin) Lu Kang, China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson:
"The nature of Michael Kovrig's case is very clear. It is absolutely not about so-called personnel or cultural exchanges. Now the Canadian side is trying to confuse his case with normal personnel exchanges to deceive the international community and gain sympathy. It even tries to use this to exert pressure on China. This is completely futile. The Chinese government will carry on our work in light of proper judicial procedures without any interference."

STORYLINE:
China's ministry of foreign affairs spokesperson called attempts to "exert pressure" on China over a detained Canadian "completely futile."
During a regular press conference Tuesday in Beijing, Lu Kang accused Canada of attempting to "deceive the international community" by spreading misinformation about Michael Kovrig, who has been detained in China since Dec. 10.
China arrested Kovrig and another Canadian in an apparent attempt to pressure Canada to release Huawei executive Meng Wanzhou. Meng was arrested at the request of U.S. authorities who want her extradited to face fraud charges.
Lu urged Canada to "immediately release Ms. Meng Wanzhou and let her return to China safely."
Washington has been trying to dissuade its allies, like Germany, from allowing Huawei to provide equipment for fifth-generation cell networks, claiming it could facilitate digital espionage by the Chinese government.
Lu defended China's 5G technology industry and said the US "should not be uncomfortable" with it.
Lu also criticized remarks from US National Security Advisor John Bolton, who called China's actions in the South China Sea "completely unacceptable" during a Fox News interview.
Bolton said the US will continue to pursue actions to prevent Beijing from turning the area into "a new Chinese province."
