LEAD IN :
Villagers in a remote region of Russia welcome the deep mid winter as wintry weather results in a frozen river that links them to the outside world once more.
STORYLINE:
Residents of Panozero, a remote village in Russia's north, live in almost total isolation.
Here infrastructure is at a bare minimum with no surrounding roads and no mobile communication.
Twice a year the village is cut off from the rest of the world and residents are forced to cross the semi-frozen river by foot risking their lives as the ice cracks under their feet.
During the winter, when the river freezes completely, people can cross to the other side and even drive cars on the thick ice.
Residents take advantage of the freezing conditions to stock up on food, by sledging across the frozen river to nearby shops in preparation for the spring melt and the return of their isolation.
Around 250 people live in Panozero. However, the population is shrinking rapidly as there are no jobs and opportunities for its residents.
The nearest town and hospital is approximately 100 kilometres away.
Irina Boltromyuk, a local postman, is frustrated with the authorities lack of attention.
On leaving the village shop she wanders across to a pillar in the road next to a little hut, .. this is the only place where she can connect to a wifi signal, to make calls or to access the internet.
"This is our miracle pillar of internet which we use here in the cold and freezing temperatures, in the rain and the snow" she says.
"This is the pillar of shame of the Russian government, not the Karelyan government but the Russian one. Who came up with the idea to put it here ?" she adds.
Resident Raisa Gavrilova notes that with global warming the winters have been getting shorter limiting their access to the outside world.
"We are fed up with this. Each year winters are getting warmer and we see the icy crossing only for a month and a half. It is good that our cars can drive, but from the other part (of the river) nobody can come here even on the trucks. Everything remains on the other side" says Gavrilova.
There is no water supply or central heating, residents collect water from the ice holes and the only means for heating is by burning wood.
Boltromyuk and other local people have started posting videos on YouTube calling their village "the island of unneeded people."
One of Boltromyuk's videos shows her trying to cross the river Kem on a makeshift bridge during the melting season.
"There are gaps everywhere, your feet can fall in. There is no lighting so if a person walks during the night they can easily fall into the water." she says.
Villagers are demanding to be relocated, but the local government has no plans to move the community or build a bridge arguing that it is not financially justified.
"It is not economically viable to build a bridge. Believe me I would be happy to have a bridge as it would take such a weight off my shoulders. From the Soviet era the village would be cut off for a week or two. During the winter, first the pedestrian crossing and then car crossing was prepared. Shops were stocking up on various goods. Of course, it was not comfortable for people but this is how the village has always been and nobody tried to change it before." says Yevgeniya Semenova, head of the village administration.
This tiny community is dreading the arrival of spring and the thaw that follows, returning them once again to isolation.
