"Well Art Dubai has always been looking to the Global South. It has always been a place where you can find geographies together that generally you cannot see anywhere else, no ? So, the idea of putting Bawaba on the spotlight was precisely to underline this. To make it more visible so people could now, through a curator, through the eyes of a person that is putting together different energies together, will have the chance and the opportunity to make a reading about it. So, you have artists coming from the Philippines, from Pakistan, from Kenya, from different parts of the world. This year Art Dubai is showcasing artists from developing countries.
The new focus hopes to introduce new artists to a wider audience of collectors and fans, opening the door to new talent.
STORYLINE
Noisy toys careering across the floor with blinking lights... this artwork by Lithuanian artist Tomas Dauksa can be yours for just $15,000.
Its just one of the installations at this year's Art Dubai fair, now in its 13th year.
A preview showcase gives art collectors an exclusive view of the collections of art from 92 galleries spanning 43 countries.
Art lovers need to dig deep into their pockets: German artist Astrid Klein's Shot mirror series costs around 85,000 dollars, and lesser known artists like British-Pakistani artist Shezad Dawood's "Encroachment" series is priced at 33,116 dollars each.
This year the focus is on the 'Global South' in an attempt to expand the market to the developing world, with a new gallery section called "Bawaba", meaning door or gate in Arabic.
Bawaba has 10 exhibitors from all over the developing world, including the Philippines, Ethiopia and Brazil.
Pablo del Val, the International Director of Art Dubai, explains the concept:
"To make it more visible so people could now, through a curator, through the eyes of a person that is putting together different energies together, will have the chance and the opportunity to make a reading about it. So, you have artists coming from the Philippines, from Pakistan, from Kenya, from different parts of the world. So, when you go through the hand of the curator through these projects these ideas as we've been discussing they come alive in a more guided way for the visitors."
The French-Cameroonian curator of the exhibition Elise Atangana says the focus brings diversity and dynamism to the collection.
"Because some other fairs sometimes, you know, propose like a focus in a region. Here it is a totally different. It is an extended region so it brings more dynamic and diversity and different context."
One of the artists participating is Kristoffer Ardena. He says his home nation of the Philippines is a good place to make art.
"I think it's a very healthy art scene. There is like room for risk and there's room for everyone. Because I mean for example, because I also live in Spain. Like everything is there you know. But and then there's a long tradition of art making. But it's same time in the Philippines, you have that. But at the same time, I think it's the liberal, the idea of being so liberated. Because you don't have to work with an art context especially like for us as a gallery. And for me."
Another participant, Wanja Kimani is a Kenyan artist and co-founder of an art space in Ethiopia. She says it is important for the focus of the art world to change.
"I think it's definitely changing kind of the gaze on Africa. It has changed quite dramatically, and the art market reflects that. But I think our participation kind of places us in the centre as well we don't have to be on the margins. And I think I think it's important to be represented."
Art Dubai officially opens to the public March 20th 2019.
