China and the United States discussed exchange rates and reached consensus on many key, important issues in the latest round of economic and trade talks, China's central bank governor Yi Gang said at a press conference on the sidelines of the second session of the 13th National People's Congress (NPC) on Sunday.
During the seventh round of high-level economic and trade talks from Feb 21 to 24 in Washington, the world's two largest economies discussed the issue of exchange rates.
"The two sides discussed about how to respect the autonomy of each other's monetary authorities in determining the monetary policy," said Yi, adding that both sides also discussed mutual adherence to the market-decided exchange rate mechanism.
The issue of exchange rates is a long-standing topic between the two countries on many previous occasions, especially under the framework of China-U.S. Strategic and Economic Dialogue and the China-US Comprehensive Economic Dialogue.
"We discussed to honor the commitments made at previous G20 summits such as choosing not to adopt competitive depreciation, not to use exchange rates for competition purpose, and maintaining close communication on foreign exchange markets," said Yi.
The two sides also discussed the issue that both sides should commit to disclosing data in accordance with the statistics transparency standard of the International Monetary Fund. The two sides have reached consensus on many key and important issues, he said.
