STORYLINE:
MADONNA, ANDY COHEN HONORED AT GLAAD AWARDS; RACHEL BROSNAHAN, BILLY PORTER TALK MET GALA
Friends and allies of the LGBTQ community gathered Saturday night (4 MAY 2019) for the annual GLAAD Media Awards to see Madonna and Andy Cohen honored.
Emmy-winning actress Rachel Brosnahan walked the red carpet before the reception. It was the first time she's attended.
"It's always been an event that I've admired from afar. I love the work the GLAAD does. They have been around for such a long time lifting up and empowering the queer community. And I'm so in awe of the work they do, and I'm thrilled to be here tonight to help support," Brosnahan said.
Brosnahan, who has enjoyed success in the award-winning series, "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel"
was joined on the carpet by her friend, Corey Camperchioli, whose short film, 'Femme" will be adapted as a series with Brosnahan producing.
The actress feels it's her duty to use her success to help others.
"Truly, what else is it for? You know, I have been so privileged, and I have lived a life of extraordinary privilege. And that doesn't mean that it hasn't been challenging in its own way, but one of the greatest joys of having this platform that has been steadily growing over the past couple of years is to be able to throw the spotlight. To be able to hand over the microphone to other people and other artists who have something important to say," Brosnahan said.
Madonna was honored with the Advocate for Change award and Cohen was bestowed the Vito Russo award.
Madonna didn't walk the red carpet, but Cohen did.
Before receiving his honor, Cohen spoke of organizations like GLAAD being more important than ever when it comes to fighting discrimination.
"Public opinion is certainly as high as it's ever been for acceptance of the LGBTQ community, but Washington doesn't seem to care, and they're kind of, in my mind, going against the country and just trying to, you know, throw up a lot of obstacles for the LGBTQ community, you know, making it legal to discriminate against us. Kicking trans people out of the military. There's a lot of bad stuff going on, so it's important as ever to be visible," he said.
Drag superstar Shangela hosted the event.
"I'm so excited that Madonna is being awarded an honor here tonight. She has been a leader in our community and standing up as an ally for many years. And as a drag queen, oh honey, I'm ready to turn the party for Madonna," she said.
And Shangela admires Andy Cohen too.
"Amazing leader, icon, you know, someone who has continued to push the envelope, and also stand with the LGBT community strongly. And he's one of my idols, for sure."
The message of the evening was the importance of organizations like GLAAD in continuing to campaign for LBGTQ rights and acceptance.
Billy Porter has been making his statements for the community through action.
Earlier this year, he made a statement on gender identity by wearing a Christian Siriano gown on the red carpet at the Oscars.
"I knew that it was going to be important. I knew that it was going to matter. I didn't know – I mean the good news and the complicated news is that a man in a dress still causes that much of a controversy. But I'm glad that the conversation is open, and I'm glad that were having it. And I'm glad that I'm in the forefront of it. It's my calling. It's my ministry. That's why I'm here, and I'm happy and blessed to be able to do it," Porter said.
Samantha Bee, host of "Full Frontal," spoke on the red carpet before the ceremony about using humor to address sensitive topics.
"These are the tools that we have in our toolbox, so this is what we use to bring attention to really important stories. It's the only way that we know how to do things. And we are passionate about very important stories. So, this is what we do," Bee said.
"Full Frontal with Samantha Bee" won an award for the story, "Trans Rights Under Attack."
Olympic Figure Skater Adam Rippon was excited to see Madonna.
"She will be here tonight being honored for all the work she's done for the LGBTQ-plus community is just incredible. It's awesome. It's so cool to be with someone who's really helped me be more comfortable in my own skin," Rippon said.
Porter and Brosnahan also spoke briefly about preparing for Monday's Met Gala.
"I've been working on it for a couple of months. The Blonds are my designer, and that's all I can tell you," Porter
Will it top the Siriano gown he wore to the Oscars?
"It's not about topping. It's about what's appropriate for the theme," Porter said.
Brosnahan will be there too, though her schedule is pretty busy.
"Oh, well, it's a little bit chaotic because I'm in the middle of shooting season three. I honestly didn't realize it was coming up so fast, so I'm in a little bit of a last-minute scramble, but what's the fun otherwise," she said.
The 30th GLAAD Media Awards honored celebrities, films, shows and media organizations that support the LGBTQ+ community.
