"Earlier this morning, I visited the Governor-General (Sir Peter Cosgrove) here in Canberra and he accepted my advice for an election to be held on the 18th of May. We live in the best country in the world. But to secure your future, the road ahead depends on a strong economy. And that's why there is so much at stake at this election."

5. SOUNDBITE: (English) Scott Morrison, Australian Prime Minister:
"The Liberal and National parties believe that the strength of our economy is rooted in the hard work and effort and enterprise and aspiration and the champion in every single Australian. Our job is to release those champions in our economy, to release those champions in the workforce, to release those champions in our health and education sector, to release those champions in our homes. We have a plan to make Australia stronger. And on the 18th May, Australians will have the opportunity to back that plan as we're backing them. Thank you very much."

7. SOUNDBITE (English) Bill Shorten, Australian opposition leader:
"The election has been called and today the case to vote Labor is that we will deliver more jobs, better health and education, take real action on climate change and renewable energy and help push energy prices down. We'll get on top of cost of living burdens and we'll get wages moving again in this country. And we can manage the economy in the interests of working and middle class people because my team is united. Australians face a real and vital choice at this election. Do you want Labor's energy, versus the government's tiredness? Labor's focus on the future, versus being stuck in the past? Labor's positive plan for all Australians or a negative fear campaign from the other side? Do you want a united government under Labor, or another three years of division following the last six years of division under the current government? So these are important choices: energy, positive, future-focused and united."

STORYLINE:
Australia's prime minister on Thursday called a May 18 election that will be fought on issues including climate change, asylum seekers and economic management.
Prime Minister Scott Morrison told reporters that Australians live in the "best country in the world" after advising the governor-general to authorise the election.
Morrison's conservative coalition is seeking a third three-year term.
He is the third prime minister to lead a divided government in that time and only took the helm in late August.
Opinion polls suggest his reign will become one of the shortest in the 118-year history of Australian prime ministers on election day.
The polls suggest centre-left opposition leader Bill Shorten will become the eighth prime minister since the country plunged into an extraordinary period of political instability in 2007.
The election pits Shorten, a former labor union leader who has presented himself as the alternative prime minister for the past six years, and Morrison, a leader who the Australian public is still getting to know.
Morrison is seen as the architect of Australia's tough refugee policy that has all but stopped the people-smuggling traffic of boats from Southeast Asian ports since 2014.
Climate change policy is a political battlefield in a country that is the world's largest exporter of coal and liquefied natural gas and has been one of the world's worst greenhouse gas emitters on a per capita basis because of its heavily reliance on coal-fired power generation.
Disagreement over energy policy has been a factor in the last six changes of prime minister.
Shorten told reporters in Melbourne on Thursday that his party will create more jobs, improve health and education and take "real action on climate change and renewable energy".
