2. SOUNDBITE (English) Christopher Hill, former US Ambassador to Iraq:
"I think it's a pretty dangerous situation, there certainly are a lot of room for miscalculation. I think the president had in mind that he would get the Iranians into a position where they wanted to talk to him, he would get some improvement on the JCPOA (Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action), the Iran deal, but I don't think the Iranians want to play along with that. So now we have a question of how to calm this thing down?"
3. Wide of Trump speaking
4. SOUNDBITE (English) Donald Trump, U.S. President:
"We are looking at Iran. We have a lot of things going with Iran. We have... we are very prepared for Iran, we will see what happens."
5. SOUNDBITE (English) Christopher Hill, former US Ambassador to Iraq:
"I think President Trump thinks that, by, by a lot of rhetoric and public statements, Iran can be forced into some kind of willingness to talk to the U.S. and I think it's a complete miscalculation of the Iranian position. They have, you know, they have a lot of politics of their own. And the politics leads them to a much tougher position rather than a position of trying to reach out to the US."

9. SOUNDBITE (English) Christopher Hill, former US Ambassador to Iraq:
"There's a lot of scepticism. I think you have to remember that some people in this administration don't have a lot of credibility with this kind of thing. In particular Mr. (National Security Advisr John) Bolton who is a full throttled supporter of the Iraq War based on faulty intelligence. So, I think there is a lot of healthy scepticism here. And I think it behooves the administration to try to reach out to allies, talk to them about the nature of this information and perhaps actually to have a channel with the Iranians and we see no sign of that. So, instead we see a secretary of state and national security adviser kind of stumbling towards some kind of military engagement."

11. SOUNDBITE (English) Christopher Hill, former US Ambassador to Iraq:
"I think Europe is very much hemmed in on both sides. The Europeans have no love lost with the Iranians, but a deal is a deal and they'd like to stick to it. At the same time, the U.S. has kind of provisions that because oil contracts are denominated in dollars, the US is in a position essentially to exert some kind of extra-territoriality and that causes further problems for the Europeans."

13. SOUNDBITE (English) Christopher Hill, former US Ambassador to Iraq:
"Well certainly if the Iranians are involved in some of these incidents that are happening at sea, they better cease and desist from that in a big hurry. So, I would hope that if they are involved that we don't see any more involvement. That would be a first good first step. I would think too that we should have some consultations between the U.S. and its allies because its allies, and especially in Europe, are not very happy about this whole situation. And finally, I think it might be useful if the U.S. had a channel with Iran and we've seen no indication of that today."
14. Wide of Trump speaking to reporters
15. SOUNDBITE (English) Donald Trump, U.S. President:
"I spoke with President Xi this morning, of China. We'll be meeting at the G-20 and I think that is working out pretty much as I anticipated it would. China very much wants to discuss the future and so do we. So, the relationship with President Xi is a very good one. We had a long talk this morning."
16. SOUNDBITE (English) Christopher Hill, former US Ambassador to Iraq:
"I have to believe it's good news. I have to believe that both Xi Jinping and Donald Trump would like a way out of this trade impasse. So, I think it's a good thing. What worries me of course is that President Trump doesn't seem to ever want to have really strong preparation for these meetings. So essentially by the time they meet nothing's been agreed and the meeting could end in a failure, in which case the situation could get worse. So, I hope they'll kind of do what most people have done in the past and the reason most people have done it in the past is it makes sense. That is you, you have some preliminary meetings. You figure out what the two leaders can agree to and then you announce the agreement when the two leaders meet. And I think there does need to be some calming of these waters as well."

STORYLINE:
The Trump administration says it is not seeking conflict with Iran and its military buildup in the Persian Gulf is aimed entirely at deterring Iranian aggression and threats to U.S. interests and international shipping.
It's a test of resolve and credibility for the United States and Iran as the two adversaries take steps sure to further inflame tensions in the Mideast and draw them closer to a flashpoint.
"I think it's a pretty dangerous situation, there certainly are a lot of room for miscalculation," said Christopher Hill, a former US diplomat and currently with the University of Denver.
"I think the president had in mind that he would get the Iranians into a position where they wanted to talk to him, he would get some improvement on the JCPOA (Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action), the the Iran deal, but I don't think the Iranians want to play along with that. So now we have a question of how to calm this thing down?"
Iran earlier this week said it was breaking compliance with the international agreement that keeps it from making nuclear weapons. Iran soon could start enriching uranium to a step away from weapons-grade levels.
The Trump administration followed that announcement by ordering 1,000 more troops to the Middle East.
The United States has blamed Iran for attacks on two tankers in the Persian Gulf. Iran denies that.
But, Hill told Associated Press on Tuesday, "there's a lot of scepticism," over that claim.
"I think you have to remember that some people in this administration don't have a lot of credibility with this kind of thing, he added.
As the president left the White House Tuesday afternoon, heading to Florida to launch his re-election campaign, Trump told reporters he'll hold trade talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping next week at a summit of nations in Japan.
Relations between the globe's biggest economies needs "some calming of these waters as well," said Hill, although he expresses concern that the American president is not doing enough preparation to ensure success.
