"Prime Minister Abe, who was scheduled to visit India from the 15th to 17th (of December), has decided to postpone the trip, after discussions with the governments of both countries, in response to a report from the Indian side regarding the local situation. Until that time, Japan and India have been carrying out annual general visits by the two leaders, and in the future we will decide in consultation with the Indian side about the Prime Minister's visit to India at an appropriate time convenient for both sides."

"The trip to India was being coordinated with visits to Gauhati and Imphal, as proposed by the Indian side, but now it has been postponed after discussion between the two countries in response to a report from the Indian side regarding the local situation."

STORYLINE:
Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on Friday postponed travelling for a summit with India's leader in the violence-wracked northeast, where two people were killed in ongoing protests over a new law that grants citizenship based on religion and excludes Muslims.
In Tokyo, Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga said Abe "has decided to postpone the trip after discussions with the governments of both countries in response to a report from the Indian side regarding the local situation."
Violence in India's state of Assam has been raging since late Wednesday, when India's upper house of Parliament passed the citizenship bill.
Thousands of protesters began a hunger strike in Gauhati, the state capital, the morning after rioters defied an overnight curfew and police fatally shot two demonstrators.
Abe was scheduled to travel to Assam and Manipur states on Sunday for a three-day trip to discuss security and economic ties with India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
