LEADIN:
Russian petrolheads are taking on the Ural swamps in the ultimate offroad challenge.
Professionals and amateurs alike are driving their cars deep into the mud, in a race against each other and the wilderness.
STORYLINE
Driving at speed into the wildest of conditions, 35 teams pit their cars against nature.
The teams from Yekaterinburg, Tyumen, Chelyabinsk and Sverdlovsk are taking on deep swamps, huge rocks and high water.
It's all part of the challenges of off-roading, but the race organisers believe the Ural region of Russia offers splendid conditions for this kind of competition.
Organiser and chief judge of the races, Yana Krupyanko, says the competitors love it.
"Our Ural swamp is irreplaceable, no quarry, or water or sand or clay can replace it, because it is a quagmire, and it gives enthusiasts the thrill of overcoming it, going through it, dragging your car out of it."
Getting stuck is all part of the fun. But the rule is that participants must get themselves out without external help.
It is usually the navigator's task to jump out of the car, and hook the tow rope onto a nearby tree to help pull the car out of the mud pit or over a steep slope.
A winch is an essential part of every driver's kit, but each team will have made its own modifications to their vehicles.
Competitor Sergey Kalashnik says every car is unique.
"The best track of course is the one that has everything – water, swamp, and rocks," he says.
"Each car is prepared differently. Some cars are made to show better performance while driving on the fast parts of the track, others are better in the swampy parts, moving slowly but performing better in the swamp. When the track is a mix of things, everybody has a chance to prove himself."
Each team gets two attempts to go around the track, with their best results judged. Not every team succeeds in finishing.
Kirill Golovko's car couldn't complete the first round.
"It's a front wheel drive failure. The spare parts are not made for such conditions, everything needs to be strengthened. It means better planning in future, so, I think, everything will be fine, we will keep participating," he says.
Failure leads participants to upgrade their cars, to be better prepared for the next race.
Alyona Krasovitskaya has been a fan of offroading since she was 13 years old. Now she is in the driving seat for the second time. Her car has been specially modified for the challenges of the course.
"I've added to my car a function to pump up the wheels," she says.
"I can both pump them and also flatten them while driving. There are different difficult parts of the track. There's a dirt road that you drive at speed. When you go to swampy places you flatten the wheels, so that the contact area between the wheel and the swamp, let's say, increases."
There are three categories of cars taking part.
'Standard' means no upgrade has been done, They are given a shorter, easier course.
'Tourism' means some improvements have been made to allow risky parts of the track to be included; while 'extreme' cars have little left of the original model. There are also cars that are fully self-assembled.
Navigator Nikita Shadrin has a vehicle that looks like a tank.
"This car was assembled entirely from scratch, with our own hands, without any basic structure, without any instructions," he says.
"The drawings are our own designs, the spare parts were either available or found, or restored specially for this machine, and now compiled together it all works as a single mechanism."
The 'extreme' category route is the most difficult one and getting stuck is guaranteed, but participants are not afraid of it.
"To jump out into this mud, to crawl through the mud, when others are afraid to even stain their shoes, it is worth it, and makes off-roading mean something," says Shadrin.
