"We launched Quest and we launched Rift S. Both of them have our new inside out tracking system called Insight, which means you get rid of all those external sensors, all those external wires, all of that nonsense you had to setup. With Rift S, still plugs into your PC, gives you amazing top-end graphics, better resolution screens, better lenses, better fit than Rift, it's amazing. Quest is truly unique because for the first time you get all of the experience you used to get on PC, it's six degrees of freedom, which means you can both move and rotate your head and get your hand controllers. You feel like you're on a Rift, but it's standalone. It requires nothing that isn't in the box."

"All new technologies go through the hype cycle. It's well known. There's the hype, there's the reality, there's the reaction trough and then eventually it digs its way out of that. As the technology meets people's real, the accurate expectations, instead of the puffed-up balloon ones. VR absolutely went through that, AR is going to go through the same. All technologies go through that. Right now, we're at a game conference, game streaming is going to under perform on the promise, go through a trough of disillusionment and then eventually be dominant. I'll put my stake in the ground and say that's my prediction for that technology as well. Having said that, VR is going to be a thing. We're gonna be there. We're absolutely going to deliver on the promise in the long run."

10. SOUNDBITE (English) Jason Rubin, Vice President of Special Gaming Initiatives, Facebook:
"Facebook has said a couple of times that it believes VR will reach a billion users. I believe VR will reach a billion users, but what I think is more relevant in the short term is when will it reach 10 million users on one platform. When will we reach the 100 million users that a PlayStation reaches ? A billion is an awesome number, it's huge and we're going to get there. But once we get to that 10 and eventually hundred range, you're now dealing with a platform that can grow on its own, that the developers can hit, incredible amounts of return on investment. It's an ecosystem that's fully compatible. So, I'm focused more on the local. How do we get to those self-sustaining ecosystem moments, which I think we will hit in the next few years, and then from there it's a glide path to a billion."

"You don't need a PC to be connected with it, you don't have any wires. I think that that is kind of showing the potential of it being a more normal thing. I think right now there's been very few games that have kind of figured out how to utilize VR in a way that feels natural. I know personally when I played VR it's usually the movement that feels like this big barrier for me, where I want to walk, but I have to point and click at things. I'm not ruling VR out, but I wouldn't necessarily say that VR kind of took off like some people thought it would."

LEADIN:
Facebook's Oculus is hoping a new, untethered virtual reality headset will help kickstart the VR market.
The company is showing off its latest VR technology at Los Angeles video game expo E3.
STORYLINE:
At previous E3 expos, virtual reality was virtually everywhere. But at this year's event that's no longer the case.
Facebook's Oculus is hoping to kickstart the VR market, launching its new $399 "Quest" headset.
Previous Oculus headsets required a powerful PC to work. Unlike those, Quest works as a standalone device, meaning an easier - and cheaper - entry option.
The headset from Facebook's Oculus division won't require a smartphone or a connection to a personal computer to create artificial worlds.
"You feel like you're on a Rift, but it's standalone. It requires nothing that isn't in the box," says Jason Rubin, vice president of special gaming initiatives at Facebook.
In 2012 when early demonstrations of the Oculus Rift wowed audiences — so much that Facebook acquired Oculus for $2 billion two years later.
Despite large sums ploughed into the field by Facebook, Sony, Samsung, Microsoft and Google, VR hasn't yet made much of a dent in the real world.
These days, VR is mostly a niche product for gaming and business training, held back by expensive, clunky headsets, a paucity of interesting software and other technological shortcomings.
Some of the biggest consumer complaints involve expense, laggy or glitchy graphics and the fact that many systems still tether the headsets to gaming consoles or PCs.
"All new technologies go through the hype cycle. It's well known," says Rubin.
"There's the hype, there's the reality, there's the reaction trough and then eventually it digs its way out of that. As the technology meets people's real, the accurate expectations, instead of the puffed-up balloon ones. VR absolutely went through that."
Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg eventually hopes to have 1 billion people using virtually reality.
"Facebook has said a couple of times that it believes VR will reach a billion users," says Rubin.
"I believe VR will reach a billion users, but what I think is more relevant in the short term is when will it reach 10 million users on one platform. When will we reach the 100 million users that a PlayStation reaches."
Sydnee Goodman from gaming website IGN says Oculus' Quest headset may attract more gamers to VR.
"You don't need a PC to be connected with it, you don't have any wires. I think that that is kind of showing the potential of it being a more normal thing."
The Electric Entertainment Expo, now simply known as 'E3', runs till June 13.
