"5G is a game changer in the tech industry and South Africa having lots of communities that are rural, issues like tele-medicine, 5G can bring that to reality. We don't have to have doctors everywhere, but if we have a hospital here, well-resourced in Cape Town, we can connect any clinic, any hospital out there without the specialists because the specialists can just interact with any patient and any doctor out there in the rural areas. So the 5G platform gives us a very good opportunity for us to attend to the health issues that confront us, to attend to education, food security issues and many other issues. So that's why we think it's a clear game changer."

"The price of data has fallen dramatically over the last few years and it's set to get even lower. I think there has been a battle between fibre and satellite and fibre has been winning that battle, because once it's laid, it can be deployed very quickly and cheaply and the prices are affordable. But all of a sudden we have now two things happening. We've got Ka coming along, Ka-band. So for the first time now we can put high bandwidth through very small terminals, 75cm terminals. And we can make data affordable or Internet access affordable to many countries now and individuals in those countries."

AfricaCom 2019, Africa's leading information and communication Technology (ICT) show, opened in Cape Town on Tuesday, with a number of Chinese companies taking the center stage.
The three-day event covers topics including 5G, wholesale telecoms and digital video distribution.
China's telecommunications giant Huawei showcased its latest products and 5G technology at the show and was the focus of attention. Other Chinese companies like China Telecom Global and ZTE were also featured prominently at the show.
Pinky Kekana, Deputy Minister of Communications and Digital Technologies of South Africa, who attended the event said that 5G technology will change the way society functions and improve the lifelihood of South African people, especially those in rural areas.
So that's why we think it's a clear game changer," said Kekana.
Data shows that around 69 percent of African people do not have access to the Internet today and many African telecommunication companies are looking to 5G technology to tap the huge potential of the African market.
"The price of data has fallen dramatically over the last few years and it's set to get even lower. I think there has been a battle between fibre and satellite and fibre has been winning that battle, because once it's laid, it can be deployed very quickly and cheaply and the prices are affordable. And we can make data affordable or Internet access affordable to many countries now and individuals in those countries," said Ayes Amewudah, Vice President of Sales for Talia Limited.
Chinese companies like Huawei and ZTE have signed cooperation agreements with local operators to provide 5G equipment during the event. The South African government is expected to auction 5G frequency band in 2020 and start pilot operation to provide 5G service in 2021.
This year's AfricaCom brings together 15,000 attendees, 450 speakers and 500 exhibitors. More than 400 science and IT companies presented their advanced products and technologies.
