"It took us some time to put together from the inception of the idea. History is a brand and we knew we wanted to cover the anniversary. It was obviously iconic. History is a brand that celebrates these, you know, anniversary achievements, and the Apollo moon landing feels like it's in that, you know, in the wheelhouse, for sure. It took us - I would say from an idea inception through actually delivering, probably a little over a year."

"For the viewer, we opted to tell this chronologically and immersive. So, what I mean by that is really we, you know, a lot of sort of the anniversary docs coming out really take out a wide swath, you know, and look at the Apollo - the Apollo organization as a whole. We opted to really just look at almost three to four weeks of the mission, right? Told from a tick-tock standpoint, right? And we wanted to put viewers really in the console with these three men. There was, you know, there was a ton of uncertainty. There's a ton of untested technology. Aldrin and Armstrong, you know, in retrospect put their chances of success at 50/50. And we wanted to put the viewer in the moment with them."

"All it took was one thing to go wrong. And, you know, they - while they sort of kept a straight face throughout the process, there was a ton of uncertainty. And, you know, I think they were as surprised as anyone that they were able to pull this thing off and, you know, in our doc we talk through - there's small things that were unexpected because you - look, look at the end of the day, no one really knew if this thing was even possible. I mean, Gene Krantz, who ran mission control said there was three options: either they're going to crash, they were going to abort, or they're going to land."

"There was one instance where they're about to land the lunar module, they're making the descent and this error message starts to - there's an alarm that starts to go off with a with a code that says 12 0 2 and mission control is frantic. Armstrong and Aldrin are asking, you know, what this means, and can they continue the descent. And in our doc, we outline the story of this kid who had a cheat sheet of all the error messages written in front of him. He was a twenty - I want to say he's a 24-year old kid. He's basically a young I.T. guy who, in our tapes, says that he knew right away based on the cheat sheet that it was nothing of - that would that would jeopardize the landing and he was the one that said it's OK to move forward."

"You know it's a - it's a celebration of sort of the capabilities that we have, right? And look I think when, you know, kids - I have three kids. They're, they're fascinated by the, you know, the moon landing. They're fascinated by what we were able to accomplish. I mean that sort of doesn't get old and I feel like, you know, what makes this documentary on History so special is it's sort of, you know, those kids are now grown and it fit feels - there's a nostalgic piece to it that's both, you know, celebrates man's achievement but also sort of celebrates the fact that, you know, we can do anything. And it's just a great sort of moment in time for our nation's history."

NEW DOCUMENTARY PROVIDES INSIGHT TO THE APOLLO 11 MOON LANDING
As the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing draws near, a new documentary tells the incredible story of mankind's greatest leap.
"Moon Landing: The Lost Tapes" contains rare photographs, newly uncovered footage, and recently discovered audio interviews. But the one-hour documentary also exposes the hidden doubts and fears as Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, and Michael Collins were on their way to making history for the July 16, 1969 launch.
Steve Ascher, senior vice president for production and development at A+E Originals says this documentary is unique because it covers a period of about three weeks leading up to the mission.
"For the viewer, we opted to tell this chronologically and immersive. So, what I mean by that is really we, you know, a lot of sort of the anniversary docs coming out really take out a wide swath, you know, and look at the Apollo - the Apollo organization as a whole," Ascher said.

Aldrin and Armstrong, you know, in retrospect put their chances of success at 50/50. And we wanted to put the viewer in the moment with them."
"Moon Landing: The Lost Tapes"  premieres Sunday night on History.
