LEADIN
The Australian city of Canberra is trialling a fleet of driverless cars to help some of the city's older residents stay mobile.
The aim of the study is to assess whether driverless car technology might be able to positively help senior citizens.
STORYLINE:
In the driver's seat, and on the road to independence.
For Canberra resident Marie Keir, being part of this trial has provided a glimpse of what the future may hold.
"I wouldn't have to be driven by the family, I could keep driving myself. So I wouldn't have to rely on other people," she says.
Here in the Australian Capital Territory, the local government is trialling automated cars for older residents.
Academics say, for residents in suburban areas, being unable to drive can be a major social impediment.
The hope is that driverless cars could change that.
"When older drivers stop driving we know they get unhealthy, so they can't connect socially as they did before, they can't go to the shops or to church," says Dr Stephen Isbel, an Occupational Therapy Associate Professor at Canberra University.
While academics are focused on the benefits for social inclusion, the government here is also interested in the technology's potential to help save lives.
It's committing $AUD 75,000 ($50,600) towards the trial.
"Well, for Canberra as a whole, it will mean a much safer city. It'll mean your commute is much safer. We have somewhere between 20 and 30 little bingles (crashes) a day now in the ACT, and that's normally because of driver distraction," says the local MInister for Advanced Technology and Space Industries Mick Gentleman.
"We can tell when a driver is - you know, well before they actually fall asleep, we can tell when they are fatigued and at risk of falling asleep," adds Kyle Wilson, Research Scientist at Seeing Machines, an artificial intelligence technology company.
The car isn't fully driverless - the function is a bit like cruise control, but taken up a gear.
For those accustomed to being in control of their vehicle, it can be a little unnerving at first.
"It's really like being taken for a drive in a robot car," laughs Marie Keir.
The car is fitted with cameras to detect eye and face movement.
It can tell if the driver is fatigued or distracted, and if the driver pulls a little lever he or she can drive without touching the wheel at all.
So have there been in problems with the trial so far?
"The only issue we had this morning was a kangaroo came "whoosh" across the car," says Dr Stephen.
A common problem throughout Australia, and one human drivers grapple with too.
