అమెరికాలో తుఫాన్ విరుచుకుపడుతోంది. భీకర గాలులతో బీభత్సం సృష్టిస్తోంది. ఫలితంగా దేశవ్యాప్తంగా వేలాదిగా విమాన రాకపోకలకు తీవ్ర ఆటంకం ఏర్పడింది.

అమెరికాలోని మిస్సిసిపి, టెక్సాస్, లూసియానా రాష్ట్రాల్లో తుఫాన్ బీభత్సం సృష్టిస్తోంది. ప్రచండ గాలులతో విరుచుకుపడుతూ... వందలాది ఇళ్లను ధ్వంసం చేసింది. టెక్సాస్, లూసియానాలో విపత్తు కారణంగా పలువురు ప్రాణాలు కోల్పోయారు. మిస్సిసిపిలో విద్యుత్ వ్యవస్థ కుప్పకూలి లక్షల మంది అంధకారంలో బతుకున్నారు. ఆ రాష్ట్ర గవర్నర్ అత్యవసర పరిస్థితి ప్రకటించారు.

తుఫాన్ ప్రభావంతో దేశవ్యాప్తంగా వేలాది విమాన సర్వీసులు రద్దయ్యాయి. మరికొన్ని ఆలస్యంగా నడుస్తున్నాయి. ప్రయాణికులు గమ్యం చేరుకోవడానికి తీవ్ర అవస్థలు పడుతున్నారు. గంటల తరబడి విమానాశ్రయాల్లో పడిగాపులు కాస్తున్నారు.

Over 100 rescuers are working around the clock in search of survivors after the collapse of two residential buildings Friday morning in the Muzema slum community, a poor area in west Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
The area where the buildings were constructed was one of the hardest hit by rains and flash floods earlier this week and is making rescue efforts much harder, especially because of the mud.
Relatives and friends of the missing people have been waiting anxiously with the hope of finding their loved ones. Residents of the buildings had moved-in just six months ago.
"Besides worrying about the people that died, I'm concerned about the security of everyone that lives here. Is it safe or do we need to leave?" asked Pedro, local resident.
"I am waiting for a family of friends who are buried under the rubble, a father, a mother and two children," said Socorro Guedes, another local resident.
It's still unclear how many people lived there because the community is run by groups called militia in Brazil that are mostly formed by ex-police officers who take control of land and illegally build apartments for rent in the informal market.
Neighboring buildings were evacuated for fear of new collapses, and they will be demolished according to city authorities. It's estimated that there are 60 illegally constructed buildings in the same favela.
The two buildings with four and six floors respectively, had been condemned last year, but construction continued as a court injunction prevented demolition.
Meanwhile, firefighters said that they still hope survivors can be found because air pockets may have been formed under the rubble. The rescue operation will continue but it's running against both time and possibly more rain.
