STORYLINE:
GAME SHOWS WIN WITH CELEBRITY HOSTS
Whether it's Alec Baldwin celebrating word play, guessing song names with Jamie Foxx or spinning the Joker's wheel with Snoop Dogg, game shows are winning these days with celebrity hosts.
It's a current TV trend, but it's not a new concept. Johnny Carson, Jackie Gleason, and Dick Van Dyke were all game show hosts at some point in their careers. Still, the "cool" factor has increased in recent years.
So, what draws celebrities to sign up to host?
Foxx, who hosts "Beat Shazam," told The Associated Press that he saw the writing on the wall years ago and asked his manager to pursue an opportunity. The music trivia show airs on Fox.
"I said, 'Bro, in the next few years, everybody will be hosting a game show, or part of one. The Rock, Kevin Hart, Justin Timberlake has one. So, we think we hit though – we hit it with 'Beat Shazam.' We have nothing against anybody else's, but we got the show," Foxx said.
James Sheridan, a curator at the Paley Center for Media, recognizes that A-List celebrities have found success on game shows, but he considers Foxx a bit special.
"I think he's a terrific host, and an Oscar winner hosting a game show, that's not something you often see," Sheridan said.
While celebrities have historically been part of the game show landscape, Sheridan claims that has not always meant certain success.
"In earlier days there were people who were famous hosting game shows. Jackie Gleason hosted a game show," Sheridan said. "It was known as the biggest flop in the history of television. It lasted one episode."
In the past, game show hosts were often a punchline for comedians and late-night hosts. But that's changed over the years.
Snoop Dogg, the most recent host of "The Joker's Wild," says he's never cared about any stigma.
"I mean everything I do is cool, so I don't have that issue," Dogg said.
Sheridan recognizes that celebrity hosts currently dominate the game show landscape, especially at primetime. But news people played a big part in the very early days, he points out.
"'What's My Line,' was hosted by John Daly, who was a television anchorman, and he hosted that show for 17 years," Sheridan said.
The list includes one of the most revered television anchors of all time.
"Walter Cronkite had a game show called 'It's News to Me,'" Sheridan said.
Meredith Vieira carries on the tradition. The former host of "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire" used to be a television journalist.
While promoting her new show, "25 Words or Less," Vieira explained how her news background maked her suited her for the job.
"As a reporter, I know how to ask questions and draw people out, make them feel comfortable so they can play the game as well as possible. I think all my skills played into that. And games are sort of infectious. When the atmosphere is fun and it's light or playful everybody sort of participates," Vieira said.
"There were stars, going back, that were doing it. But, yes definitely, in more recent years, the trend has been stars hosting game shows," Sheridan said.
Sheridan is also impressed by Alec Baldwin hosting the latest incarnation of "Match Game."
"He's the perfect host for that I think. He has great interaction with the celebrities, and with the contestants," Sheridan said.
Some game show hosts have become celebrities, of course.
Pat Sajack and Vanna White have become household names by hosting "Wheel of Fortune" for decades. And then there's Alex Trebek.
While he's not the first host of "Jeopardy," he has fronted the show to high ratings since its revival in 1984.
"I think he's one of those people that people trust, and they just feel comfortable with, and just look forward to him and seeing him on television. They eat their dinner with him, so there's a real comfort and a familiarity with him," Sheridan said.
Dax Shepard, who hosted "Spin the Wheel" over the summer, doesn't consider himself cut from the same cloth.
"I'm not an Alex Trebek. I have a lot of love for Alex Trebek, but it's much more offbeat than Alex," Sheridan said.
Shepard, who typically wears his hair long and shaggy hair, with casual clothes, says he tries to dress more formally for this role.
"Yeah, I'm looking the part. I'm in the suit and I have slicked back hair, but then I'm also being very left of center," Shepard said, stressing that he means that in terms of wackiness and not politics.
"Spin the Wheel" is a high-stakes game show that provides contestants to win over $20 million (USD) per episode.
Other shows are more modest with prizes. Sheridan believes it's the combination of "the excitement" of seeing ordinary people winning prizes or money, and the celebrities they welcome into their living rooms.
Vieira agrees, but says she's seen a shift in the reason people want to get on game shows as contestants.
"A lot of the years that I was doing were tough years in this country when we started out people were playing for like boats or a summer home or whatever. And by the end, people were playing for a mortgage and to keep their kids in college. It was a real shift in priorities, and I helped people," Vieira said.
She added: "There's nothing more rewarding than going home and going, 'My God, that man has enough money for another year's mortgage, whatever it was and that makes you feel good at the end of the day."
