LEAD IN:
In a world of mass produced sport equipment, one Australian man is making cricket bats from scratch.
Shashi (Shar-She) Samprathi (Sam-Par-The) is one of very few people in Australia who knows how to craft a cricket bat.
He uses locally grown wood and sponsors bats for community cricket teams and players.
STORYLINE:
The sport of cricket is everything to Shashi Samprathi.
He lives it. He breathes it. It's in his DNA.
"Coming from India I was cricket mad obviously. Coming from a middle-class family, I couldn't afford to ask my parents to send me to cricket coaching so I never played normal cricket," says Samprathi.
He may not have played at a professional or even amateur level, but that didn't deter him from taking part in the sport in inventive ways.
"It was all street cricket, using light pole as the wicket and a rubber ball and with one piece of timber carved out as a bat," says Samprathi.
And using that piece of timber as a youngster may have triggered something deep in him.
Now living in Australia, he was trained in 2015 to make bats by former Australian cricketer Ian Callen using Australian-grown English Willow.
And he has donated many of his bats to local cricket clubs.
"The product I'm creating is used in the community by players," he says.
"This is not a full-time business for me. I'm making it based on cost recovery and also, you know, trying to help the community."
Samprathi has become so good at his craft that he's now known well beyond the boundaries of Canberra.
High profile people like Pakistani cricketer Iftikhar Ahmed have had a bat made by him.
Each bat is tailor made for the individual player, which is something local cricketer Jamie Belcher was particularly attracted to.
As a birthday present, Belcher's mother had a bat made by Samprathi.
"Hand crafted bit of Australian wood, personal touch with Shashi, lovely guy and then you get to go out there with a Canberra name on your bat and start hitting fours pretty nice," he says.
Belcher's step father, Robert Pegolo, met Samprathi while selling him tools online. As it turns out, woodwork is Pegolo's passion and he couldn't believe someone was actually crafting cricket bats in Canberra.
"This is a very specialised aspect of woodwork so to find that we had someone here in Canberra who actually was doing that, I was sort of 'bow to this man', because he is so good," he says.
For Samprathi, cricket is more than a game. It's a way of life. And he is spreading his belief one carefully crafted bat at a time.
