"For Manbij, for northern Syria, we made many deals with the Americans and also there were commitments by them to clean those areas and to create safe zones and we did many negotiations and we started some implementation of some commitments but it didn't go anywhere. And these exercises turn into a kicking the can exercise and then our patience ran out and now we are determined to create a safe zone at our border for our nation's security and for Syrians to save them from the oppression and cruelty of terrorist organization."

4. SOUNDBITE (English) Umit Yalcın, Turkish Ambassador to UK:
"Time to time when we are reading some news and some comments I feel that some words, some concepts of ally or betrayal are being used very wrongly or maybe they are being used deliberately, I don't know. But who is ally who is betraying who? These are very important questions and I think the concept should be used fairly and correctly when the issue is related with a NATO ally, Turkey, and Turkish nation security and we are expecting our allies to support Turkish security concerns and Turkish national borders security because of that reason. We don't want to feel betrayed or abandoned when we are struggling against terrorists."

6. SOUNDBITE (English) Umit Yalcın, Turkish Ambassador to UK:
"So far according to this possible operation we did not talk but we have talked this issue in the past especially if these foreign terrorist fighters are in Turkey - they are providing consular services to them and also according to that joint declaration of intent - if those terrorists are in Turkey we can deport them and also they have a commitment to prevent those fighters to leave this country. I mean we have a cooperation mechanism. If those terrorists are in Turkey I think we can be creative and we can find some new mechanisms for cooperation."

STORYLINE:
The Turkish ambassador to Britain said Tuesday that the United States had been "kicking the can" on commitments made over the handling of areas in northern Syria.
"We did many negotiations and we started some implementation of some commitments but it didn't go anywhere," Umit Yalcın told Sky News, adding "our patience ran out and now we are determined to create a safe zone at our border for our nation's security and for Syrians to save them from the oppression and cruelty of terrorist organization."
Yalcin was speaking to Sky News in London as Turkey was poised for an imminent invasion of an area in northeast Syria, the latest major escalation in the war-ravaged country.
The country has been preparing for an attack on the Kurdish fighters in Syria whom Ankara considers terrorists allied with a Kurdish insurgency within Turkey.
The Kurdish-led civilian administration in northeastern Syria issued a "general mobilization" call along the Syrian border with Turkey on Wednesday.

Expectations for that assault rose after US President Donald Trump on Sunday abruptly announced that US troops would step aside ahead of the Turkish push - a shift in US policy that essentially abandoned the Syrian Kurds, longtime US allies in the fight against the Islamic State group in Syria.

But Trump also threatened to "totally destroy and obliterate" Turkey's economy if the Turkish push into Syria went too far.

Turkey has been massing troops for days along its border with Syria and vowed it would go ahead with the military operation and not bow to the US threat over its plans against the Kurds.

The Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), which is holding thousands of IS fighters in several detention facilities in northeastern Syria, has warned that a Turkish incursion might lead to the resurgence of the extremists. The US allied Kurdish-led force captured the last IS area controlled by the militants in eastern Syria in March.
Meanwhile, Umit Yalcin said that any Islamic State militants from Britain who fall under Turkish control following the operation, could be processed under a new deal between Turkey and Britain.
The two countries currently have an agreement whereby British extremism suspects detained on Turkish ground are deported to the UK.
But Yalcin said Turkey was open to a different agreement.
"If those terrorists are in Turkey I think we can be creative and we can find some new mechanisms for cooperation," Yalcin said.
