Ambassadors of southeast Asian nations say as China is opening its door wider and wider since the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) was proposed five years ago, it is now easier to do business with China.
Over the past few years, Indonesia, Sri Lanka and the Philippines have witnessed enhanced trade relations with the world's most populous country, said their ambassadors to China, who also expect to introduce more high-quality products to Chinese consumers through e-commerce platforms.
Djauhari Oratmangun, Indonesian ambassador to China, said the two countries have developed close ties in trade, technology and people-to-people exchanges, especially in the digital economy.
Praising China's digital sector as world leading, the ambassador said many Indonesian products have entered the Chinese market through e-commerce. The two countries still have a huge potential for cooperation in this field thanks to each other's complementary advantages.
"Other cooperation has already started, like Alibaba, with some of the startup companies in Indonesia, Tencent, JD.com. In Indonesia, we call it JD. ID. It's quite effective now, reachable to the people. Last year, in fact, we introduced five products through Alibaba platform Tmall. During the Single Day, of course, we are going to introduce some of the products as well, mostly on the food and beverages," he said in Beijing
Karunasena Kodituwakku, Sri Lankan ambassador to China, said his country has seen an increasing number of Chinese tourists in recent years, and they like buying locally produced gems and black tea.
He expects Indian Ocean's sea food to be served on dining tables of Chinese people.
"But now we want to introduce new products, particularly the vegetable and fisheries products. The salt content of the Indian Ocean has given additional flavor, taste into fish available in Sri Lanka. So there's a heavy demand. Similarly, the crabs and prawns. Similarly, we have a lot of fresh vegetables, particularly grown with the organic fertilizer because now consumers all over the world, particularly the middle class is very concerned about their own health, therefore there is a heavy demand for organic vegetables," he said.
Jose Santiago L. Sta. Romana, Philippine ambassador to China, said a new railway project agreement would be hopefully signed at the second Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation.
In addition to infrastructure construction, the Philippines also hopes to diversify its exports to China, according to the diplomat.
"Best seller is, of course, bananas. But now we would like to diversify. Right now, aside from bananas, then there is also the pineapples, Philippine pineapples. It's also available now. And then up and coming are the mangoes. So we hope to develop more, export more. We're also looking forward to export of, we called it the hass avocados. It's still undergoing quarantine procedures," he said.
The BRI, proposed by China in 2013, refers to the initiative of building the Silk Road Economic Belt and the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road. It aims at building a trade and infrastructure network connecting Asia with the world.
