STORYLINE:
Chinese telecom equipment giant Huawei has become increasingly self sufficient in technology after pouring billions of dollars into research over the past decade, despite pressure from Washington, allowing it to compete globally without American suppliers.
In August, Huawei released a next-generation smartphone that uses the company's own processor chips, instead of versions from Qualcomm or Intel found in other models.
Huawei Technologies Ltd. is barely known to Americans.
But it is the No. 2 global smartphone brand, after Samsung, and the biggest maker of switching gear that forms the heart of phone networks.
It is expanding into emerging fields from self-driving cars to artificial intelligence.
Smartphone sales will suffer if the "entity list" curbs announced in May disrupt access to technology including Google services for smartphones, said Huawei founder Ren Zhengfei.
But he said US President Donald Trump is making the company a tougher competitor by pushing it to focus resources on its most important products.
"When the entity list came out, they hoped Huawei would die," Ren told The Associated Press.
"Not only did Huawei not die, it is doing even better."
That is more than bluster, industry experts say.
While it needs some American technology, especially Google maps, music and other services linked to the company's Android operating system, they said Huawei is increasingly self sufficient after spending 485 billion yuan (65 billion US dollars) on research and development over the past decade.
And they said Huawei is a pioneer in areas such as next-generation, or 5G, telecoms.
"Now the major advantage that we have as Huawei, is that we make all the bits that go in there," Richard Griffiths said, vice president of Huawei's consultant office.
"We're not dependent on any other company, on any other country, to be able to produce all of this 5G equipment. We can make it all ourselves."
Huawei's success puts it at the centre of US-Chinese tension over trade and technology that triggered a tariff war.
Huawei is known to consumers as a smartphone brand, but Western governments focus on its network equipment, used by 45 of the 50 biggest global phone carriers.
United States officials have said Huawei is a security threat, but have offered no evidence to support claims it might aid Chinese spying.
Washington is lobbying European governments to exclude Huawei from 5G networks but Germany, France and Ireland have no plans to ban any supplier.
Huawei is trying to allay Western concerns by allowing reporters for the first time to see laboratories where its experts work on wireless base stations, advanced materials and other technologies.
Ren denies the American accusations and told reporters in January he would reject a Chinese government demand to reveal customers' secrets.
Huawei was added May 16 to the US Commerce Department's "entity list," which requires government permission for any technology exports.
The company was granted two 90-day extensions through mid-November after American suppliers of processor chips and other technology warned they stand to lose billions of dollars in sales.
Ren said he wants to keeping using Android and working with American suppliers that he said will lose more than Huawei, if the ban takes effect.
Huawei, with 107 billion US dollars in 2018 sales, said it spent 100 billion yuan (15 billion US dollars) on research and development last year, more than Apple or Microsoft.
It has 76,000 engineers and other researchers at its sprawling, leafy headquarters campus in southern China and in Silicon Valley, Russia, India's Bangalore and other industry centres, making it a leader in developing network equipment to support 5G, along with Ericsson and Nokia.
Huawei also is among hundreds of companies creating 5G phones and other devices, making it the only competitor to straddle the two markets.
The biggest potential American blow to Huawei is the loss of Google services, standard features on Android-based phones.
"Huawei can't be a global smartphone behemoth if it does not have access to Android's operating system," said Samm Sacks, an expert in Chinese digital policy at the New America think tank.
"Nobody is going to spend money to buy a premium Huawei phone if it doesn't have maps, YouTube, Google Play," she added.
Ren and other executives say phone sales might be 20-30 billion US dollars less than forecast over the next two years.
As a fallback, the company unveiled its HarmonyOS in August and said Android phones can be switched to the new system in days if necessary.
And in other aspects, Huawei is powering forward.
Huawei bills its Mate 20 X smartphone, which went on sale in China in August, as the first with 5G capability.
It uses Kirin 980 and Balong 5000 chips from Huawei's HiSilicon subsidiary instead of Qualcomm or Intel.
HiSilicon also makes Kirin chips for lower-end phones and Kunpeng chips for servers.
There is "no US influence" on Huawei's 5G chips and network gear, Ren said.
The company's strengths in 5G, Ren said, sets it up well for future technological competition in intelligent computing and artificial intelligence – with or without the support of the United States.
