LEADIN
Humble cardboard has taken centre stage at the international Face of the Streets festival in Russia.
The performers spent several days training locals in Yekaterinburg to create costumes and masks from cardboard ahead of the event.
STORYLINE
Cardboard as you may never have seen it before.
This is the 6th International Festival 'Faces of the Streets' event in Yekaterinburg.
Musicians, dancers, actors, illusionists and stilt walkers from different countries are here to show off their skills to the audiences on the streets.
The highlight of this year's event is the array of items made from cardboard - from simple crowns and cardboard hats to whole costumes, trees and fairy tale animals.
Cardbodia country - a street art project involving professional actors - is behind this year's initiative.
"We found out that here on the City Day there will be Cardboardia country, family masterclasses, where parents with children come, and from the material given to them, well, this one, they do anything they like. Here my child did Lego, he likes Lego," says participant, Olga Bannykh.
For seven days before the festival, professional artists, trainees and local people created the decorations, costumes and masks from cardboard.
"Why I love cardboard so much, is this," says artist Michael Veerman from Holland.
"You can get it everywhere, it's very cheap material, you can use cardboard that is already used, so you don't need to buy expensive materials, and it's a pleasure to use it, to cut it with a knife or with scissors, use glue or scotch (tape), anything, and everybody can do it."
The festival unites artists of all genres and styles. One thing they all have in common is keeping the attention of the people wandering by.
Without the usual lighting rigs and sound effects available in a traditional theatre, it's a special challenge.
Yaroslav Kolchanov, Director of Tuki-Luki theatre, says:
"In a box, let's call it roughly this way, the spectator comes and sits from the beginning till the end and follows the development of the plot, how it started, how it developed and how it ended. In the street, the public often just passes by, and our task, during the performance, is to make the person, the spectator who passes by stop, to stay, to make it interesting for him, so he stops but also understands what is going on."
Tuki-Luki theatre from Perm not only succeeds in keeping the attention of the audience, it also encourages audience participation.
One young spectator, Lyubov Borisenko, hopes to become an actor and is happy to get this experience now.
"I liked this particular performance very much, it's a new look at the world of theatre, world of art, at performance, all was clear without words what they tried to express. I supported them with pleasure, I was of course pleased that I was called (to participate), but honestly, I was happy to take part because I also plan to become an actor."
Over 30 theatrical teams, dance groups and street artists from Russia, Switzerland, France, Germany are here for the festival.
Genres vary from classic pantomime to modern immersive performances.
The team from Ufa entertains the audience with a play called "Circus has left".
Actor Yulia Safina says: "We just like it to perform in the street, because unlike shows performed inside in a building, these emotions are most sincere, so these are people who saw us by chance, nobody knows us here, we are in Yekaterinburg for a second time, and people know us very little, but they saw us, got acquainted, and if they stayed till the end, took photos, told us something, these are very real emotions that you cannot get in a theatre with the stage where people specially come having bought a ticket."
The performance is enjoyed both by children and adults.
Visitor Maria says: "It's a very good format, very light, dynamic, street performance, which happens really right here on this spot next to you, it's very interesting."
This immersive play by Juhyung Lee from France has no professional actors on the stage - all the action is being done by passers by willing to have a go.
"I wanted to make a situation that the audience see each other instead of watching artists, dancers, actors, musicians on a stage," says Lee.
The action seems to be simple – you need to untangle the thread, wind it up into a ball and bring it to the artist waiting on the other side of the web.
Despite its simplicity it mesmerises both the participants and the audience.
"It's a very interesting action, I cannot understand its meaning in full, but I have some interpretations in my head, I guess this is about everybody having their own way, sometimes you cross with other people on it, sometimes it gets difficult, sometimes it leads you above the other lines, sometimes you are down, every time you are looking for a new option, the impressions are amazing, I would even take part one more time," says participant, Ekaterina Il'timirova.
The 6th International Festival 'Faces of the Streets' took place in Yekaterinburg 16-18 August 2019.
