"They didn't target a U.S. ship, they target a British tanker. It's a way to respond without escalating too much and it's just a seizure, it's not sinking it. So it's not an act of war. It's a calculated careful response, I think, in a tit-for-tat now relationship between the U.S. and its allies and Iran."

"What I don't think the US is likely to do, and the president's likely to do, is go to war over this. That is to strike major targets in Iran. I think the U.S. is probably going to act at the same level asymmetrically without escalating too much. It may continue to talk on background about whether it makes sense to sit down and talk to the Iranian senior leadership. There's all sorts of rumours right now about the possibility of U.S.-Iranian negotiations, much like what we've seen between the Trump administration and North Korea. I think those will be discussed. I think also though that the British and the Americans will look at some kind of an option now to respond to Iran, but one that doesn't escalate much."

"The U.S. has talked about a different kind of negotiation, particularly one that may be a little bit more systematic, include the missile programme, and may include also Iran's support to proxy organizations. But I think in general what we've seen with the Europeans is they're they want the U.S. to be very cautious. They don't want a war."

"I don't hear any prospects for the moment that sanctions are going to be dropped. I think if there was some progress on certain things that the Trump administration was stipulating, it is possible, as the administration also indicated to North Korea, it might reduce sanctions. But those issues are going to be broader than just the nuclear deal. This is their complaint and criticism of the Obama administration. They didn't include the missile programme, didn't include didn't include proxy forces, Lebanese Hezbollah for example. I think the U.S. is going to want a broader package of issues to discuss. Iran may want to keep this, like the Europeans are willing to do, just to the nuclear deal."

"I'm optimistic that there will be discussions, either directly or indirectly, between Washington and Tehran. I mean at the very least, the US will use some of its partners to get messages into Tehran, so there will be messages back and forth. And it's certainly even possible that at some point down the road there are direct negotiations. What I'm pessimistic about is that they will actually lead to something meaningful."

"I cannot imagine that the Iranian regime will be willing to negotiate on its missile programme, or its support to proxy organisations in the Middle East like the Trump administration wants. These are its strongest, and at this point, it's really only military assets right now that give it some comparative advantage. It's not going to negotiate those away."

STORYLINE:
A Middle East and defence analyst with a think tank in Washington says despite Iran's seizure of a British-flagged oil tanker Friday, outright hostilities between the U.S. and Iran don't appear likely at this point.
Seth Jones directs the Transnational Threats Projects at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, and specialises in counterterrorism, counterinsurgency, unconventional warfare, and covert action.
He views the situation in the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz as a tit-for-tat series of moves between the U.S. and its allies, and Iran.
"I think the U.S. is probably going to act at the same level asymmetrically, without escalating too much," he says.
"There's all sorts of rumours right now about the possibility of U.S. Iranian negotiations, much like what we've seen between the Trump administration and North Korea."
Details of what took place Friday remained sketchy after Iran reported that it had seized a British-flagged oil tanker in the Strait of Hormuz.
The Stena Impero was taken to an Iranian port because it was not complying with "international maritime laws and regulations," Iran's Revolutionary Guard declared.
British Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt initially said two ships were seized Friday in the Strait of Hormuz, the second sailing under a Liberian flag.
President Donald Trump said U.S. officials would talk with Britain about the unfolding crisis.
Jones says he thinks the U.S. and Great Britain will "look at some kind of an option now to respond to Iran, but one that doesn't escalate much."
He says that he's optimistic there will be some sort of direct or indirect communications between Washington and Tehran, given the recent escalation of tensions in the region.
"What I'm pessimistic about is that they will actually lead to something meaningful," he says.
