"The expedition itself is a historic event for us because it's never been done before and every day is a potential new discovery for us. And all this data and information being gathered is going to be so valuable in terms of our strategies and policy making, even laws: putting in place the marine protected area that we are trying to do as per our Marine Special Plan. So, it's an incredibly exciting experience, and we hope that all these discoveries will translate to action on the ground."

29. SOUNDBITE (English) Lucy Woodall, Principal Scientist:
"So we've just finished here in Poivre, we've had three days - we got all of our work done in three days, that's a whole heap of work that we've done - what have we found out ? We've found out that we've got a gentler slope and fewer walls than compared in other locations. This is really important because we need to ground-truth a whole range of different habitats for the marine spatial planning that is going on here in Seychelles. Currently, we have found that some of the animals living on the seabed are very different, so I really look forward seeing what happens at D'Arros and Desroches and then we can understand if this is a regional difference."

"They're actually quite common, they come up on most of the samples we bring up, and they mostly like to hangout on soft corals, is what we see. So, on most of the soft coral samples, there's quite a few of them clinging onto it."

LEADIN:
The British-led Nekton Mission is in the final stages of its ambitious science expedition to explore the depths of the Indian Ocean, near the outer islands of the Seychelles.
Each dive into the deep is giving an insight into the secrets hidden beneath the waves.
STORYLINE:
After weeks at sea, scientists onboard the Ocean Zephyr have reached the Amirantes islands, a group of coral islands and Atolls just 268 kilometres (166 miles) from the main Seychelles island, Mahe.
With scores of manned submersible dives and around a thousand samples collected, the mission promises a treasure chest of scientific data to inform Seychelles' government in their task to protect their vast ocean territory.
"The expedition itself is a historic event for us because it's never been done before and every day is a potential new discovery for us," says Alain de Comarmond from the Seychelles' Ministry of Environment, now onboard the vessel.
"And all this data and information being gathered is going to be so valuable in terms of our strategies and policy making, even laws: putting in place the marine protected area that we are trying to do as per our Marine Special Plan."
After exploring the atolls of Alphonse, Aldabra and Astove, all with rich marine life and fascinating underwater features, the Amirantes are proving to be quite different.
Here, there's more sand on the seabed and few underwater cliffs are home to different species.
The Nekton Mission, with researchers from over 40 organizations, is spending seven weeks surveying underwater life and mapping the sea floor in the seas around the Seychelles.
The aim is to document changes taking place beneath the waves that could affect billions of people around the region over the coming decades.
The data will, in part, be used to help the Seychelles consolidate and expand its policy of protecting almost a third of its national waters by the year 2020.
The initiative is a key component of its so-called "Blue Economy", an attempt to balance development needs with those of the environment.
"We've got a gentler slope and fewer walls than compared in other locations," says Nekton principal scientist, Lucy Woodall.
"This is really important because we need to ground-truth a whole range of different habitats for the marine spatial planning that is going on here in Seychelles."
There's a burst of activity inside the labs onboard the mission mothership, the Ocean Zephyr, after each dive.
The routine is always the same: Quickly retrieve the samples from the submersibles and preserve them in seawater.
One-by-one, they're photographed, labelled, described, and divided into smaller samples to be preserved and sent back to be studied at a later date.
For Jeanne Mortimer, an American biologist who's spent decades studying the sea turtles that abound in the outer islands and was instrumental in conservation efforts to protect them, this was her first glimpse into what lies in the depths of the waters she knows so well.
"It's very exciting, it's sort of like creatures from another planet," she says.
"It's really fun to look at them and feel that not too long ago they were down so deep. It's a different world."
With just a few more dive sites to go before the end of the mission, Nekton scientists and crew are now rushing against the clock to accomplish as much as they can, hoping to discover the secrets lying beneath the waves.
EDITOR'S NOTES
The Associated Press is the only news agency working with British scientists from the Nekton research team, on its deep-sea mission that aims to unlock the secrets of the Indian Ocean. AP video coverage will include exploring the depths of up to 300 meters (1,000 feet) off the coast of the Seychelles in two-person submarines,  the search for submerged mountain ranges and previously undiscovered marine life, a behind-the-scenes look at life on board, interviews with researchers and aerial footage of the mission. The seven-week expedition is expected to run until April 19.
