Volkswagen is launching a new Passat and T-Roc SUV in Geneva today, along with a concept for an electric dune buggy.
STORYLINE
The latest offerings from Volkswagen have been revealed at the Geneva Motor Show.
First up on stage is VW's all-new Passat.
The eight generation Passat is an update on Volkswagen's previous models, which the company describes as the world's best selling mid-sized car.
It comes with assistant systems including travel assist, adaptive cruise control and emergency steering assist.
"We've applied our most innovative technologies to make the most successful car in this class even better. The Passat sets new benchmarks as a companion for people who spend a lot of time in the car. The Passat makes their life easier, with more comfort, more safety and best connectivity. With I.Q. Drive Volkswagen is offering a full package of highly intelligent assistant systems," explains Ralf Brandstatter, Chief Operating Officer, Volkswagen Brand.
Next up is a compact performance SUV: the T-Roc R.
It appears on stage in the R's trademark warm blue colour, and Jurgen Stackmann, Member of the Board of Management, Volkswagen Brand Sales and Marketing, is keen to show off its assets, including three knot horsepower, 4 knot newton metres of torque and speed of 0-100 in 4.9 seconds.
"What a fantastic package and a compact car, mixed with beauty and style.The T-Roc R has four wheel drive and high precision suspension that was developed at the Nurburgring, where else, actually to really compose a fun to drive, fantastic car," he adds.
But perhaps Volkswagen's most memorable car of the day is this cute green buggy - an electric concept all terrain vehicle called the I.D. Buggy.
The two seater goes from 0 to 62 miles per hour in 7.2 seconds with its top speed capped at 99 mph and was based on classic Californian dune buggies from the 60s.
"This our new definition of our legendary buggy," explains Dr Frank Welsch, Member of the Board of Management Volkswagen Brand Development.
"And for me, more than any other concept, the classic dune buggy of the 60s is a symbol of freedom and a symbol of fun."
The annual Geneva International Motor Show opens to the public on 7 March and runs until 17 March 2019.
More than 900 models will be shown, including over 150 world and European premiers.
