"It's the only day that we can stop Prayuth (Chan-ocha) and his circle from extending his power through the 250 senators whom (the deputy prime minister) Prawit (Wongsuwan) will appoint. Therefore, we need as many people to go vote. I believe the power they have is not any bigger than the power of the people."

"In 2014, they took away the people's power by a coup, at the point of a gun.  In 2019, the same NCPO (coup makers) plotted to take away the people's power by writing constitutional regulations, such as the 250 senators who can vote for the prime minister. This is what will distort the will of the people."

7. SOUNDBITE (Thai) Sudarat Keyuraphan, candidate for prime minister for the Pheu Thai Party:
"(Thaksin is) an ideological leader - an ideological leader in policies that addresses people's problems. We use (his) principles. It doesn't mean that using Thaksin's ideas leads to his ownership because Dr. Thaksin has not meddled with the party's administration anymore. The party leader and me, as chief strategist, are running everything. But the principles that have been inherited, we've never walked away from them."

STORYLINE:
The leader of a political party that's the main challenger to Thailand's military-dominated government says only her party commands enough support to have a chance of derailing the junta's efforts to extend Prime Minister's Prayuth Chan-ocha's five years of authoritarian rule.
Sudarat Keyuraphan, the Pheu Thai Party's contender for prime minister, said Sunday's elections are far from being free and fair because of new rules introduced by the military government. But she is urging all Thais to vote, hoping to produce a turnout high enough to overwhelm the junta's goal of containing the influence of parties not aligned with the military.
The election will be Thailand's first in nearly five years since its military seized power from an elected Pheu Thai-led government in May 2014. The junta, which took over government with a now much derided promise to restore happiness to the people, has resorted to interrogations and imprisonment for dissenters when threats and propaganda have proved insufficient.
The vote is also the latest chapter in a two decade long political struggle that pits exiled populist leader Thaksin Shinawatra's political machine against a conservative establishment led by the ultra-royalist military who are fearful of his appeal.
Pheu Thai, Sudarat said, can win enough seats to block Prayuth, the 2014 coup leader, from continuing as prime minister. At least two months after the election, the 500-member parliament and a 250-member appointed Senate, expected to largely back Prayuth, will vote on prime minister, with a simple majority of 376 required for victory.
A more probable outcome than an outright Pheu Thai win, however, is political deadlock.
Pheu Thai has broad support in the countryside but a military backed party has co-opted some of Pheu Thai's local bosses, who have the power to sway votes, and a new political force headed by a photogenic businessman, Thanathorn Juangroongruangkit, is making inroads with young voters.
Sudarat said measures such as the appointed Senate "distorts the will of the people" and her party consequently needs a large turnout to end Thailand's military-rule.
Sudarat said Thaksin is no longer part of the party's apparatus but he remains its ideological leader.
She said the party's supporters remain loyal to Thaksin because his policies were able to address their problems and increase their standard of living.
