LEAD IN:
When the Africa Cup of Nations kicks off next month, a team of football manufacturers will be keeping their eyes firmly on the ball - trying to spot whether it's one of theirs.
The 70 strong team works for Alive and Kicking - an organisation that helps empower people with disabilities.
STORYLINE:
Alive and Kicking is a non profit making organisation that specialises in making hand-stitched footballs. Founded in 2004 it operates in Kenya, Zambia and Ghana,
In Kenya, the organization provides employment for more than 70 people - most of whom are living with disabilities.
Eliud Kinyua, Human Resources Manager at Alive and Kicking explains "to begin with, Alive and Kicking Kenya is a social enterprise that is not for profit making, we focus in creation of employment, for the less fortunate in the society. In this we focus on people living with disabilities, people with limited education, and also people who are living in vulnerable areas, that is informal settlements. For people with disabilities I would say that they have benefited directly and indirectly, directly is that they have been able to get some employment, which otherwise they would not have gotten elsewhere."
Alive and Kicking has so far hand-stitched more 300,000 balls 81,000 of which were bought by UEFA (Union of European Football Associations) and donated across African countries in 2004.
In 2012 the 'Balls For Africa with John Lewis' project led to 3,600 Kenyan-made balls being sold in the UK and the same number donated across Kenya.
The organisation has also supplied footballs to some of the biggest clubs in Europe including Arsenal, Manchester City, and Chelsea.
According to 2015 UN Report, around 600 million people globally live with disabilities. Of those 80% are in low income countries like Kenya.
Many live in poverty and have limited access to education, health, suitable housing and employment.
"For now, if you give us an order for five hundred balls, than you have sustained one person in employment for a whole year. So, it will be my joy to see that our balls are even being played in AFCON (African Cup of Nations) and even internationally. Because I know it is getting employment and that's making an impact even to the whole country," says Kinyua.
Juma Charo has been working at Alive and Kicking for almost a year.
"I have been here for almost an year, and I love this job very much. We are supplying Uganda, Tanzania, Kenya, and all over East Africa. So you see, this job has fed me a lot, I have helped my friends, I'm educating my children, and I'm progressing on with life" he says.
26 year-old Joyce Khalechi was finding it difficult to find work because of a debilitating condition in her shoulders. Now she says she is earning enough to support herself.
"We people with disabilities have a lot of challenges out there because before we get a job, there are people who look at us the way we are, so to employ you somewhere becomes very hard for them. Sometimes you find that you can do some jobs but your boss looks at you and thinks you cannot do that job because of the way you are," she says.
"Personally I have a shoulder problem which makes it hard for me to carry heavy things with hands, on head so jobs which I could get require me not to use a lot of energy, but mostly the jobs I got were hard and required that you did them anyway, and your employer has to understand your condition so that you can work well with them," she adds.
Alive and Kicking make balls from African leather, built for tough terrain. The balls are hand stitched and individually screen-printed to make customised designs.
It's been more than a decade since Kenya qualified for the Africa Cup of Nations Tournament which kicks off in Egypt on June 21st.
Kenya's national team, the Harambee Stars will be among the teams aiming to win the continental cup under the leadership of Frenchman, Sebastien Migne.
As the tournaments get underway the employees at Alive and Kicking will be watching keenly from their TV sets hoping for a goal, but also hoping to spot a ball that they have been involved in making.
"These balls we make here go all over the world. And whenever I see them anywhere, like last month I was in Kampala (Uganda) and I saw them being played there, so I was feeling like, this thing we are doing is something important and is something that can uplift people because they are going all over the world," says another employee Eunice Odino.
