3. SOUNDBITE (English) Holly Hollman, General Counsel, Baptist Joint Committee for Religious Liberty
"Unlike what the government said here the cross is not a universal symbol of sacrifice. The cross symbolizes the story of the resurrection of Jesus Christ, a story not shared outside of Christianity and is displayed by the government is not like the Ten Commandments or temporary holiday displays whatever its intentions. The government's claim that the cross simply stands for valor to commemorate the war dead does not ring true."

5 . Mid of exterior of Supreme Court
6. SOUNDBITE (English) Holly Hollman, General Counsel, Baptist Joint Committee for Religious Liberty
"For Christians who think seriously about the events and message of the cross represents the government's claim is deeply offensive. Christians should reject that claim and the short term perceived gain of preserving a prominent government sponsored symbol of our faith."
7. Tight of Supreme Court exterior
8. SOUNDBITE: (English) Monica Miller, Senior Counsel, American Humanist Association
"We were really pleased with the discussion in the court today. I think that we made our points clear that we very much support our veterans. We thank our veterans for their service, and we're here to honor all veterans today not just Christians, but everyone who is not represented by a Latin cross as a war memorial."
9. Mid of attorney's and others representing veterans
10. SOUNDBITE (English): Kelly Shackelford, Chief Counsel, First Liberty Institute (Representing American Legion)
"I think today we have a choice of two Americas. An America where we tear down this memorial, which is just the beginning because the religious cleansing would continue throughout the country with memorials and religious symbols throughout our landscape. You can start with Arlington National Cemetery where there are two large free-standing crosses there, which would have to come down and it would go into every community of every state of this country. Or we could have an America where the court cleans up this area of the law, which they intend to do I think, stops these attacks on memorials. And really when we all remember that as a country we have secular and religious symbols and monuments throughout our country. And that's OK. In fact that's a good thing."
11. Wide of exterior of Supreme Court
12. SOUNDBITE: (English) Mike Carvin, Attorney for American Legion
"I don't think there's any rational basis for forcing this cross to either come down or be sold or moved other than naked hostility towards religion which is not at all the purpose of the Establishment Clause."
+++BLACK FRAMES+++
13. SOUNDBITE (English): Mary LaQuay, Descendant of Soldier on the Memorial
"My uncle his name is on the cross. I every time I go by that cross I think of my uncle and it would be like desecrating of a memorial to a fallen veteran."

STORYLINE:
The US Supreme Court seemed inclined Wednesday to rule that a 40-foot-tall cross that stands on public land in Maryland is constitutional, but shied away from a sweeping ruling.
The case the justices heard arguments in is being closely watched because it involves the place of religious symbols in public life.
But the particular memorial at issue is a nearly 100-year-old cross that was built in a Washington DC, suburb as a memorial to area residents who died in World War I.
The Cross's challengers argue that the Cross's location on public land violates the First Amendment's establishment clause, which prohibits the government from favoring one religion over others.
They say the cross should be moved to private property or modified into a nonreligious monument such as a slab or obelisk.
The Cross's defenders include The American Legion, which raised money for the monument, and Maryland officials who took over maintenance of the cross nearly 60 years ago to preserve it and address traffic safety concerns.
Maryland officials say the cross, sometimes called the "Peace Cross," doesn't violate the Constitution because it has a secular purpose and meaning.
A decision in the case is expected by the end of June.
