China's national railway system is expected to transport a record-setting 11.8 million passengers after the end of the busiest part of the Spring Festival holiday season on Wednesday, a year-on-year increase of 1.5 percent.
Meanwhile, parts of expressways in the country have been closed due to bad weather conditions.
An additional dispatch of 1,028 passenger trains is also expected across the country.
Sichuan in the southwest, Anhui in the east, and Hunan and Hubei in central China are the provinces where most of the migrant workers travel from after the first week of the annual holiday season.
The Zhengzhou Railway administration in central China's Henan Province added another 48 trains on Wednesday, mainly to the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region in north China, the Yangtze River delta region in east China, the Pearl River delta region in south China and the northwestern regions where there is a high demand for migrant workers.
\For highway transportation, 15 sections of 10 expressways and one provincial highway in Hebei Province, Shanxi Province, Qinghai Province and Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region in north or northwest China have been closed due to heavy snowfall and road icing. The reopening time of those sections is to be determined, dependent on improvement of weather conditions.
A total of 17,370 flights are scheduled to be carried out nationwide on Wednesday as well, which will also make a record high. The overall operation has been stable.
The Spring Festival is the country's grandest traditional festival when people across the country return to their hometowns for Chinese New Year celebrations and family reunion. The week-long first half of the 15-day Spring Festival holiday season starting from the Chinese New Year's Eve is the most essential part of the annual festival.
