STORYLINE:
Members of the public in New Zealand are beginning to hand over their guns to authorities in the wake of the Christchurch mosque shootings.
During a news conference on Monday, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern applauded those who had already surrendered guns and urged more gunowners to participate.
On Tuesday, police said a member of the public handed in their weapon at the Masterton police station, north of Wellington.
It wasn't clear what type of weapon it was.
Ardern also said her Cabinet had agreed in principle on tightening gun restrictions in New Zealand and those reforms would be announced next week.
