STORYLINE:
A Romanian family due to meet Pope Francis as he visits Iasi on Saturday said they were excited to meet the famous religious figure, as he travelled the country to go to Romania's most famous shrine.
Thousands gathered for a public Mass in the city amid heavy rain-soaked conditions.
Elisabeta Balan, a 71-year-old grandmother who was meeting the pope said it was a joy for her and helped to bring her large family together for the occasion.
Her 13-year-old granddaughter, Adelina Paula Balan, said she was excited but nervous to meet the pontiff.
Francis is travelling across Romania to make up for the fact that St. John Paul II was only allowed to visit the capital, Bucharest, in 1999.
