STORYLINE:
A protester who was shot in the arm in during anti-government demonstrations in Khartoum said increased violence is only fuelling unrest in Sudan.
Ahmed Ismail is one of hundreds who have been injured in the past months during protests against the country's longtime ruler, President Omar al-Bashir.
Ismail said before he was shot, security forces were firing heavy rounds of tear gas and shooting guns into the air.
"There were about two guys in front of me, and behind me, a group of people (protesters)" he said.
"So I signalled to the guys in front of me and then ran with the rest of the people towards the western side of the square. And then I heard the sound of gunfire. Up until then, I wasn't aware of anything. But after five or ten steps I felt a pain on my right side."
Ismail showed The Associated Press photos and videos of his wounds and the bullets that hit him.
He'd been hit twice, both in his right arm and leg, and required surgery where he'd been hit on his arm.
The government's latest tally stands at 30 people killed and 100 wounded since the protests began mid-December of last year.
But activists say the numbers are far greater, with 53 dead and 2,000 wounded, with many of those from gunfire by government forces.
Among the dead are teachers, engineers and doctors.
Ismail said that despite the government maintaining that the protesters are foreign agents looking to destabilize the country, the movement has largely stayed true to its commitment to non-violence.
"They want change, but through peaceful means only. No matter how many bullets, that won't discourage protests, quite the opposite," he said.
The current wave of protests began in opposition to surging prices and a failing economy, but quickly shifted to calls for an end to al-Bashir's nearly three-decade rule.
Al-Bashir, who seized power in a military coup in 1989, insists that only elections, which he intends to run in, could bring change.
