3. SOUNDBITE (English) Lisa Grace, Metal Detectorist:
"Well, we got a phone call to say; 'Yeah, can you come and teach us to use this new metal detector?' So, we went down to help the lads out and to teach them how to metal detect. And one of the guys went to the corner of the field and found the first coin. And we had a look at it. And it turned out to be William the Conqueror, which is a really, really rare king to find."

5. SOUNDBITE (English) Adam Staples, Metal Detectorist:
"It was a process, it took about five hours to dig all the coins. When there was one coin, we realised how significant it was to find the coin of William the Conqueror in that condition. When it was ten coins, it became more significant. When it was 300 coins, you know, we were aware of the significance but, yeah, it just went on and on and on."

7. SOUNDBITE (English) Adam Staples, Metal Detectorist:
"At the time of finding it, we found it on the Saturday, Lisa was desperate to tell people about it. But we had, you know, a few million pounds worth of coins in the back of the car. You know, it's not the kind of thing you want to be broadcasting, so we waited until we delivered them here to the British Museum before we told anybody."

"Now, what makes this such an interesting hoard is not just the fact that it's unusually large for the period. But the fact that it's the largest hoard from the period immediately after the Normal conquest."

13. SOUNDBITE (English) Gareth Williams, Curator of Early Medieval Coins, British Museum:
"We have in the hoard three coins where people have been breaking the rules. These are what we call mules, and mules are so called because they're neither one type of coin nor another. They're a combination of two types. And we have in the hoard, the first known mules which have on one side the design of Harold II and on the other, the back design, the reverse, of William I. There's also one which combines the front of a coin of Harold's predecessor, Edward the Confessor and the back of William I. Why does this happen? Well, basically it's a form of tax dodging."

LEADIN:
A hoard of coins, dating back almost 1,000 years, has been found in Somerset in southwest England.
The coins show signs of tax evasion in early Britain.
STORYLINE:
They may seem small, but they're hundreds of years old, dating back to Britain's historic Battle of Hastings in the 11th Century.
A metal detecting couple unearthed thousands of these silver coins from a field in Chew Valley, in the south west English county of Somerset.
Lisa Grace, one of the detectors, says they came across the coins by complete chance.
"One of the guys went to the corner of the field and found the first coin," she says.
"And we had a look at it. And it turned out to be William the Conqueror, which is a really, really rare king to find."
Grace's partner, Adam Staples, says the find just seemed to get bigger and bigger until they realised they had stumbled on something huge.
"When it was ten coins, it became more significant," he says.
"When it was 300 coins, you know, we were aware of the significance but, yeah, it just went on and on and on."
While the haul has not yet been officially declared as treasure, which would allow the finders and the landowner to claim money, Staples believes the coins could be worth up to £5 million (approx. $6 million USD).
Curator of Early Medieval Coins at the British Museum, Gareth Williams, says this particular hoard is special.
"Now, what makes this such an interesting hoard is not just the fact that it's unusually large for the period. But the fact that it's the largest hoard from the period immediately after the Normal conquest," he says.
Williams also explains that some coins had different designs on either side, classing them as "mules".
These mules tell an interesting story, says Williams.
"The first known mules which have on one side the design of Harold II and on the other, the back design, the reverse, of William I. There's also one which combines the front of a coin of Harold's predecessor, Edward the Confessor and the back of William I. Why does this happen? Well, basically it's a form of tax dodging," he says.
The person creating the coins was trying to avoid paying a fee to obtain the latest design.
Williams believes that whoever the coins belonged to was also in some way involved in the Battle of Hastings in 1066.
