The preliminary results of the Cuban constitutional referendum show that nearly 87 percent of Cuban voters approved a new constitution that preserves the county's single-party socialist system and centrally planned economy while instituting modest economic and social changes, according to the Cuban national electoral commission on Monday.
The preliminary results showed 7.8 million of the 8.7 million eligible voters participated in the Sunday referendum on the new constitution. Specifically, about 6.8 million voted in favor and 706,400 voted against, according to Alina Balseiro Gutierrez, president of the commission, at apress conference held in Havana on Monday.
The new draft constitution, approved by most voters, will be formally promulgated and implemented by the Cuban government, replacing the current constitution promulgated in 1976.
Cuba's constitutional amendment process was declared open by Miguel Diaz-Canel Bermudez, President of the Council of State of Cuba in June last year.
After months of discussion and revision, the Cuban parliament deliberated and adopted the new draft constitution on December 22 last year and put it to the referendum.
