According to the district Management and Service Office which takes care of waste management in the city, only forty to fifty percent is disposed of in the landfill 32 kilometres outside the city. The rest is either burned, or there is littering creating messy areas."

In one day we collect approximately one ton of plastic but we can only sell about 600-700 kilos."

Then something else that we do is we use for take-away containers, instead of using styrofoam containers, we use containers that are made of sugarcane and biodegrade quickly."

LEAD IN:
Like other cities in the region, the Laotian capital Vientiane is struggling with with vast amounts of plastic pollution.
The problem is blamed on the expanding use of plastics combined with inadequate waste management, but now a small army of plastic scavengers are helping to reduce the city's plastic pollution problem.
STORYLINE:
Like many countries across the world Laos is struggling to cope with plastic waste.
With GDP growth approaching 7% annually, Laos' economy is booming.
But hand-in-hand with economic growth comes more plastic waste.
Coupled with inadequate waste management, particularly in rural areas, the communist country is struggling with a plastic pollution epidemic.
While its cleaner than many other cities in the region, locals say the capital Vientiane is getting dirtier all the time.
Government figures show average waste production in Lao People's Democratic Republic is 0.75 kilograms per person each day, in the capital Vientiane that figure rises to 1.4 kilograms per capita per day.
Canals in the city are often blocked by plastic litter which causes flash flooding in the rainy season.
The roads leading out of the capital are particularly badly affected by plastic waste.
Plastic bottles and bags are thrown out of passing vehicles without a second thought.
In the days when food was wrapped in banana leaves it was not a problem, but in the plastic age it leaves behind waste which can take hundreds of years to biodegrade.
"More than 600 tons of plastic waste is produced in Vientiane every day," says Green Vientiane volunteer Phongpumma Tik. "According to the district management and service office which takes care of waste management in the city, only forty to fifty percent of it is disposed of in the landfill which is 32 kilometres outside the city. The rest is either burned locally or there is littering creating messy areas," he says.
A small army of private plastic collectors has sprouted around the city, valiantly trying to keep up with Vientiane's plastic problem.
A network of centres pays cash for plastic which is later recycled.
However many scavengers only collect from businesses and not from the streets.
"We don't collect reusable waste from the garbage" says plastic collector Hina Chanthavong."We usually collect it from housekeepers working in different offices and restaurants near the city centre, especially near the morning market. They contact me once they have enough to sell."
While plastic scavengers help to keep the streets clean, they barely scratch the surface of the problem, says recycle centre owner Kye Vongphakdy.
"We work as a middleman for both parties - sellers and buyers," he says. "Although it helps the community we only collect about 1% of the total out there, which is better than doing nothing at all. In one day we can collect approximately one ton of plastic but we can sell only about 600-700 kilos of it."
In 2016 the World Economic Forum released a report claiming that if we continue to pollute at this rate, there will be more plastic than fish in the ocean by 2050.
The report says 90 percent of this waste is from just ten rivers, eight of them are in Asia.
In an effort to reduce plastic consumption, many hospitality businesses in Laos are switching to eco-friendly alternatives such as bamboo straws and drinking water refill stations where people can refill their bottles for free.
Leading the way is popular Vientiane hangout Earth, owned by American David Jessop.
"Although Earth is a small restaurant we give out perhaps 100 bamboo straws everyday. And if you think there are 365 days in a year, well that's a lot of straws. Then something else that we do is we use for take-away containers, instead of using styrofoam containers, we use containers that are made of sugarcane and biodegrade quickly."
With plastic use growing there is a need to create more awareness among the Laotian people to encourage for them to change their habits when disposing of plastic waste.
Green campaigners also advocate for more funding to improve and expand waste management services and for more legislative action aimed at keeping Laos clean.
