6. SOUNDBITE (English) Jimmie Allen, recording artist - on succeeding along with Kane Brown in a predominantly white music genre:
"Nashville is ready now for what I'm doing, for what's, for what Kane is doing. I'm so proud of that guy. You know, I look at Kane like a little brother, you know. I've, you know, we've seen his story, you know, how he grew up and, you know, coming to town. He did things different too you know? Because so many people say, 'You got to come to Nashville, you got to play Broadway, you got to do this,' you know? Kane is just a testament that you could be yourself and take your own journey and still find success even when other people don't think you can. So to be able to, you know, for both of us… Because he's, I feel like he's been hitting his stride for a long time, but for us both to start really hitting radio success in country music at the same time is super special. And we've got so many guys that came before us and ladies to thank. You've got DeFord Bailey, the first black Opry member back in the '20s and '30s. You got Charley Pride. You've got Mickey Guyton. You've got Darius Rucker, that killed the rock world and was killing the country world, you know. So many people that came before us that really helped kind of lay the foundation to show you know what, there are people that look like us that can be successful. I feel like it's important to every kid to see someone that looks like them in the field that they want to be in because it instills confidence in you. Because you know, as cheesy as it might sound, people used to always say, 'You can grow up be to anything you want. You can even be president.' But until Obama became president, you couldn't really tell a black kid that you could be president because there wasn't one. So I feel like representation is very important."

8. SOUNDBITE (English) Jimmie Allen, recording artist - on his song "All Tractors Ain't Green":
"So I wanted to write a song on the record that was personal to me. You know, I have a lot of songs on the record that are personal, but I feel like anybody could sing them. I'm not … There are very few people that could sing the song 'All Tractors Ain't Green' because when you look at country music and the stereotypes that come within it, people think a white guy from the South, whether it's Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, anything. But just goes to show, you know, there's different ways to get the same thing done. You know it's for women who get told 'It's a man's job.' For men to get told, 'Hey, that's what women do.' You know, it's pretty much saying, you know, there's no limitations because of your race, or your gender, or your economic stature in society. You know, it's just be who you are, love who you are and one day you'll be where you need to be."

10. SOUNDBITE (English) Jimmie Allen, recording artist - on his song "Underdogs":
"So I didn't write 'Underdogs' but when I first heard it, it reminded me of my story, you know? It's a song for people that has been given up on, but never gave up on themselves. For people that feel like they've never been given a chance, just taking that chance because, you know, I'm a firm believer that doors don't open - you kick them open and that's what 'Underdogs' is about. You know, when people tell you you can't do something, alright, watch. I feel like having a chip on your shoulder is good. It motivates you, you know? It gives you that little extra ammunition, you know, that people that have been given everything their whole life don't have."

STORYLINE:
JIMMIE ALLEN SAYS 'NASHVILLE IS READY' FOR HIM
Jimmie Allen says "Nashville is ready" for him.
The country music artist is the first black musician to have his debut single reach number one on the Billboard Country Airplay chart.
His success came the same week that fellow black artist Kane Brown topped the country album chart in the U.S..
"I'm so proud of that guy," says Allen. "I look at Kane like a little brother, you know. I've, you know, we've seen his story, you know, how he grew up and, you know, coming to town. He did things different, too you know? Because so many people say, 'You got to come to Nashville, you got to play Broadway, you got to do this,' you know. Kane is just a testament that you could be yourself and take your own journey and still find success even when other people don't think you can."
Allen says for them both to be "hitting radio success in country music at the same time is super special" and acknowledges the impact that previous black country artists have had on the industry.
"You've got DeFord Bailey, the first black Opry member back in the '20s and '30s. You got Charley Pride. You've got Mickey Guyton. You've got Darius Rucker, who that killed the rock world and was killing the country world."
"I feel like it's important to every kid to see someone that looks like them in the field that they want to be in because it instills confidence in you. Because you know, as cheesy as it might sound, people used to always say, 'You can grow up be to anything you want. You can even be president.' But until Obama became president, you couldn't really tell a black kid that you could be president because there wasn't one. So I feel like representation is very important."
On his 2018 debut album, "Mercury Lane," Allen co-wrote a song called "All Tractors Ain't Green," directly challenging stereotypes about being black and living a rural life, being able to sing about those things even though he's not a white man from the South.
"There are very few people that could sing the song 'All Tractors Ain't Green,'" he says. "Because when you look at country music and the stereotypes that come within it, people think a white guy from the South, whether it's Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, anything. But just goes to show, you know, there's different ways to get the same thing done. You know it's for women who get told, 'It's a man's job.' For men to get told, 'Hey, that's what women do.' You know, it's pretty much saying, you know, there's no limitations because of your race, or your gender, or your economic stature in society."
Allen is nominated for new male artist of the year at the Academy of Country Music Awards, which take place in April.
