"Well, we actually had three real breakthrough artists of the year. The first one is Billie Eilish, who is Billboard's Woman of the Year this year. And she was really a slow build. She was not an overnight sensation. I was actually onto Billie a few years ago. She had worked with the different streaming services and slowly dropped albums and built a social following, so they really built her slow and carefully, and then it seemed to be an overnight sensation, but that's how things happen with overnight sensations. A direct parallel in that build is Lizzo. Lizzo was not a new artist, but she broke through this year and actually the songs that she broke through with, particularly 'Truth Hurts,' which was her big Billboard No. 1 record breaker, also was a slow build - it was from a few years ago, and a lot of the songs on her debut album that are up for Album of the Year are a few years old."

"Well, you know, it's interesting that Taylor Swift, you know, fighting for her music and fighting for her masters, as she so eloquently described at the Billboard Women in Music event, where she was named Woman of the Decade, is just a continuing struggle for artists. It's not, it's nothing new. Prince was fighting it, George Michael was fighting it. And it's just become yet another case of how business plays into art and art and commerce, and, you know, how you take someone's music and who owns the masters and who owns their life's work. This has been a continuing struggle in the music business and Taylor is the latest major superstar to highlight what an issue this is."

STORYLINE:
BILLBOARD EDITOR BREAKS DOWN HOW LIZZO, BILLIE EILISH AND LIL NAS X DOMINATED THE YEAR IN MUSIC
There were at least three major music stars to break out in 2019, but only one was a true overnight success.
Billboard's Ian Drew described how Billie Eilish, Lizzo and Lil Nas X dominated the music scene in 2019 as he recapped some of the year's biggest songs, biggest artists and biggest stories.
"We actually had three real breakthrough artists of the year," Drew said. "The first one is Billie Eilish, who is Billboard's Woman of the Year this year. And she was really a slow build. She was not an overnight sensation. I was actually onto Billie a few years ago. She had worked with the different streaming services and slowly dropped albums and built a social following, so they really built her slow and carefully."
Drew said that Lizzo was similar, but her careful placement of older songs helped her break out.
"A direct parallel in that build is Lizzo," said Drew. "Lizzo was not a new artist, but she broke through this year and actually the songs that she broke through with, particularly 'Truth Hurts,' which was her big Billboard No. 1 record breaker, also was a slow build - it was from a few years ago, and a lot of the songs on her debut album that are up for Album of the Year are a few years old."
But Lil Nas X was one of the rare artists to explode thanks to new technology.
"When Lil Nas X, his song was interpolated and used on TikTok, It blew up and became the No. 1 charting song on the Billboard Hot 100 in history," said Drew. "So he really broke history, broke through boundaries. He really made history, and he is up for Album of the Year, quite shockingly, at the Grammys for just a very short E.P."
Also big this year was Megan Thee Stallion for her song of the summer.
In terms of big musical stories and trends, Drew noted that Taylor Swift's very public feud with manager Scooter Braun and her former record label over owning her music was history repeating itself.
"Prince was fighting it, George Michael was fighting it," said Drew. "This has been a continuing struggle in the music business and Taylor is the latest major superstar to highlight what an issue this is."
And finally, 2019 seemed to be the year of reckoning for R. Kelly, who was the subject of a documentary detailing sexual abuse allegations and is facing criminal charges.
"He's pretty much canceled," said Drew. "I mean, his career is done. The overwhelming sum of all of this is, like, you know, he's a bad guy, people have surmised from all of this. So, you know, the news keeps coming now. But I don't think you're going to see any kind of comeback for R. Kelly."
