Shivamogga (Karnataka), July 24, 2019: Backwaters of Tunga River is a paradise of migratory birds, but in recent years it is being decreasing in number. Infrequent rainfall in the region affects flora and fauna too. Mandagadde Bird Sanctuary is 20 km away from Karnataka's Shivamogga district which witnessed few migratory birds as compared to last year. The sanctuary is famous for birds like Intermediate egret, Siberian bird, Little Cormorant and Anhinga. "According to the census, before the construction of Gajanur Dam in 2007 the sanctuary had around 8000 to 10,000 birds and now the number of birds has reduced to 2500. This year around 2500 birds were migrated," claimed bird watcher and wildlife photographer Nandan. "During the monsoon season the dam releases the water and carries away the nest with the eggs of the migrated birds," he added. Deforestation and climatic change in the region has also affected flocking of birds.
