The new measures announced by China's Supreme People's Court on Tuesday to provide legal services to Taiwanese compatriots who are living in the mainland will better protect the legitimate rights and interests of the Taiwan people, according to a spokesman with the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council.
An Fengshan, spokesman for the Taiwan Affairs Office, made the remarks during a press briefing in the Chinese capital of Beijing on Wednesday.
"This is a major move that will unswervingly implement the guiding principles of General Secretary Xi Jinping’s speech at the 40th anniversary of the Message to Compatriots in Taiwan. These are professional, comprehensive and widely beneficial Taiwan-related measures. It is also the first time that the Supreme People's Court issued such systematic and normative measures to provide legal, comprehensive and equal protections for the Taiwan compatriots and Taiwan enterprises," said An.
Aiming to advance cross-Strait economic and cultural exchanges and cooperation, and deepen cross-Strait integrated development, the 36 measures cover four areas.
First, the measures require the courts to provide timely judicial services for Taiwan compatriots and enterprises to ensure their substantive rights and litigation rights. Secondly, measures must be improved to bring convenience to Taiwan-related cases to ensure judicial services of high quality and convenience. Third, authorities must gradually enhance the participation of Taiwan compatriots to join in the justice system in order to create better conditions for the Taiwan people to take part in the construction of national law enforcement. Fourth, institutions related to Taiwan-related trials must be improved to increase their capacity.
