"Of course it is to scare the audience, because that should be the purpose of a horror film, but why do you want to scare them? So I would like to, if I, it is a film about violence. And violence is not a good thing, you know, and violence is not something to shown as glamour, honestly. If you want to express yourself honestly, you know, you have to show violence as it is. And I believe it's ugly and nasty, you know, and shocking. And I have the naive concept that if certain audiences would see that, you know, they would reflect their own tendency for violence. I truly believe in that. But I'm not a messenger, you know, I am not like, what I said to you, I don't want to be didactic in my films you know? People who understand it understand it and people who don't understand it don't understand it."

"First of all serial murderer, serial killer is a popular culture figure right? But at the same time, this particular one was doing all this s**t in my neighborhood you know, in the '70s when I was born. I mean really like the guy lived 300m from where I live today, you know. My kid was in school which is right in front of his building, you know. And everybody in my neighborhood somehow had a connection to that person. The elderly people, and the Greek actor in the film, the Greek neighbor, you know, he is a close friend of mine, his uncle was the real neighbor and it was his daughter who told me the story with the maggots, you know, and I was like, 'I have to do this. It is so close to me,' you know? And I always wanted to do a scary movie and I think scary stuff has to fear me (sic) and haunted houses and demon stuff they are not fearing me you know, but a serial killer which lived around my corner, and all these like chopped body parts in his apartment, this is fearing me. So yeah, it was, it made sense to do it."
5. SOUNDBITE (English) Jonas Dassler, actor:
"Yeah, but it was really good because I have a clear starting point and a clear end point, because I got three hours of mask every morning and half an hour at the evening, so it really was in this time between I could be this character but in the rest of the time I was tired and sleeping and could enjoy myself."

7. SOUNDBITE (English) Jonas Dassler, actor:
"It was a long process. We really, before shooting we have I think several tests for this mask and it began that we had this silicone stuff and they put it in my nose. They want to build it from inside. That was per the first casting but then suddenly it was cold outside and I did something like (sniffs) and I looked at Fatih, I mean it was Fatih Akin, I had never met him before and I was, my thingy here, my silicon thingy was gone. He went, 'What is gone? It's on the floor.' And I said, 'No, it's here' (points to bridge of nose) and then we have to go to the doctor and it was really here, it wasn't anymore on my nose so from this point it was clear, 'OK, we have to put it from outside, on the nose.' And from this point the development of this makeup was incredible."

STORYLINE:
FATIH AKIN DEFENDS 'THE GOLDEN GLOVE,' HIS NO HOLDS BARRED LOOK AT THE LIFE OF SERIAL KILLER FRITZ HONKA
Fatih Akin has hit back at critics of his new film, "The Golden Glove," which focuses on real-life German serial killer Fritz Honka.
After premiering at the 69th Berlin International Film Festival, where it's screening in competition, critics slammed the movie, calling it "nauseating" and "vile."
Speaking at the festival, the director said, "if you want to express yourself honestly, you have to show violence as it is."
"It is ugly and nasty you know and shocking… I have the naive concept that if certain audiences would see that you know, they would reflect their own tendency for violence."
Akin said he wanted to present an unglamourized depiction of violence - but added "people who understand it understand it and people who don't understand it don't understand it."
Set in 1970s Hamburg, the majority of the film's action takes place in a bar called Der Goldene Handschuh, "The Golden Glove," where Honka meets with and drinks excessively with his prostitute victims.
Akin lives just around the corner from where Honka killed his victims - and says he has a unique connection to the story.
"My kid was in school which is right in front of his building, you know," said Akin. "Everybody in my neighborhood somehow had a connection to that person."
He added that this kind of real-life horror has a much greater impact on him than fantastical tales of haunted houses and demons.
"A serial killer which lived around my corner, and all these chopped body parts in his apartment," said Akin. "It made sense to do it."
Playing Honka is 23-year-old Jonas Dassler, who spent three hours each morning having prosthetics applied.
The time spent in the makeup chair gave the actor the opportunity to get in and out of character.
"It was really good because I have a clear starting point and a clear end point," he said.
"The Golden Glove" is screening in competition at the 69th Berlin International Film Festival, which ends on February 17.
