Southwest China’s Tibet Autonomous Region has achieved great results in socio-economic development over the past six years since General Secretary Xi Jinping expressed his hope for people of all ethnic groups in Tibet to stick to a development path with Chinese characteristics and Tibetan features during the 12th National People's Congress (NPC) in 2013.
The Tama Village in suburban Lhasa, capital city of Tibet, is one of the many villages seeing great changes in recent years. It was full of festive atmosphere during the Tibetan New Year and Chinese New Year, both of which fell on Feb 5 this year.
Villagers said life has become so much better in the past two years that they couldn't imagine before.
In 2017, the remaining 26 poor families got rid of poverty. Last year, all 997 households in the village moved into new homes, with the average per capita annual income reaching 20,000 yuan.
"We used to drink well water, but now have access to tap water. Heating and gas supply are available for every family. An experimental primary school was built at the entrance to the village. We also have community and village-level hospitals," said Kelsang Dolker, first secretary of the Party committee in the village.
The Tama Village is just one of the beneficiaries of the large-scale poverty alleviation campaign. Since 2016, Tibet has launched more than 2,200 poverty alleviation projects, helping to lift 210,000 people out of poverty by developing leading enterprises and economic cooperatives.
With the help of governments at various levels, residents in the Lajiao Village are making money by producing bamboo wares and planting medicinal herbs, wood ear fungus and vegetables.
"We will build some greenhouses to plant other kinds of vegetables and sell them in the cities. Starting from 2019, each household will receive some dividends," said Tashi Samdrup, chief of the villagers' committee.
Efforts have also been made in improving public services including medical care and education.
More and more primary and middle school students are having classes in smart classrooms, while schools also have access to the intelligent information management system, online marking and other advanced teaching system.
"We have adopted the education approaches based on information technology in our school, which have totally replaced the traditional chalk-blackboard teaching mode, so that the pictures and music that could not be presented in textbooks in the past are used in teaching the students," said Suo Yong, vice headmaster of an experimental primary school in Qamdo City.
Li Xinnian, deputy head of Tibet's poverty-alleviation office, put forward plans for poverty alleviation by 2020, the year China will eradicate absolute poverty.
"During the 13th Five-Year Plan (2016-2020) period, we plan to relocate 266,000 people, which is unprecedented in the history of Tibet. We will continue to improve the follow-up management services for relocated people and consolidate the poverty alleviation outcomes while continuously improving the level of public services," the official said.
Environmental protection is another pressing concern that the government has to dealt with.
Last year, Tibet invested 10.7 billion yuan in protecting and building ecological security shelters, which created 666,700 jobs and increased per capita annual subsidies from 3,000 yuan to 3,500 yuan.
