STORYLINE:
Ninety illegal immigrants surrendered to the Libyan authorities after they managed to escape last week from human traffickers in the outskirts of the city of Tobruk located in the country's far east.
The police station that was responsible for the arrest, handed over the migrants to the illegal immigration agency in the city - which placed them in a detention centre.
One of the migrants, Karim Mohamed, described that when in the hands of traffickers, the migrants had suffered torture, beatings, insults and humiliation.
When arriving at the Tobruk detention centre, workers from Libya's Red Crescent provided the necessary assistance and treatment for the migrants as soon as they arrived, including medical care.
Migrants are between the ages of 16 and 35, all men of different African nationalities.
The detention centre suffers from a lack of basic necessities to accommodate the migrants, as is the case with all other detention centers in Libya.
Footage from Tobruk showed small holding cells without windows, and a toilet area covered in filth and rubbish.
Colonel Idris Moftah, the Head of Tubrok Anti-Illegal Immigration Authority, said that possibilities were lacking, and made an appeal to the Interior Ministry - which is responsible for the illegal immigration agency - to prioritise illegal immigration.
Despite the continuing crisis of migrants crossing the Sahara to reach the Libyan coasts in the hope of reaching Europe, there is a marked decline in the number of migrants after the implementation of policies and solutions deterrent by the Libyan government and the United Nations.
