नवी दिल्ली - भारतीय क्रिकेटचे 'लिटल मास्टर' म्हणून ओळखले जाणारे सुनील गावस्कर यांचा आज 71वा वाढदिवस आहे. सुनील मनोहर गावस्कर हे जगातील सर्वोत्तम सलामीवीरांपैकी ओळखले जातात. त्यांचा जन्म 10 जुलै 1949 रोजी मुंबई येथे झाला.

गावस्कर यांनी आपल्या शैलीदार फलंदाजीने जगभरातील महान गोलंदाजांना धूळ चारली. गावस्करांनी भक्कम आणि तंत्रशुद्ध फलंदाजीने सर्वोत्तम गोलंदाजीचा सामना केला. त्यांच्या एकाग्रतेला तोड नव्हती, असे आजही म्हटले जाते.
1970-71मध्ये गावस्कर यांनी वेस्ट इंडिजमध्ये क्रिकेट कारकिर्दीची सुरुवात केली. त्यावेळी क्रिकेटमध्ये 'दादा' संघ अशी वेस्ट इंडिज संघाची ओळख होती. त्यांनी 4 कसोटीत 4 शतके ठोकली. या मालिकेत त्यांनी 774 धावा केल्या. वेस्ट इंडिजमध्ये त्यांनी 13 कसोटी सामने खेळले. ज्यात त्यांनी 70च्या सरासरीने 7 शतके केली आहेत. याउलट इंग्लंडविरुद्ध त्यांची सरासरी 38 अशी आहे. एखाद्या देशाविरूद्धची गावस्करांची ही सर्वात कमी फलंदाजीची सरासरी आहे.

गावस्कर यांनी भारताकडून 34 कसोटी शतके झळकावली आहेत. वेळी त्यांचे नाव सर्वाधिक शतके झळकावण्यासाठीही ओळखले जात होते. सर डॉन ब्रॅडमन यांच्या 29 कसोटी शतकांचा विक्रमही त्यांनी मोडला आहे.
