ನವದೆಹಲಿ: ಭಾರತೀಯ ಮೂಲದ ಅರ್ಥಶಾಸ್ತ್ರಜ್ಞ ಅಭಿಜಿತ್ ಬ್ಯಾನರ್ಜಿ ಅವರಿಗೆ ಪ್ರಸಕ್ತ ಸಾಲಿನ ಅರ್ಥಶಾಸ್ತ್ರ ವಿಭಾಗದಲ್ಲಿ ನೊಬೆಲ್ ಪ್ರಶಸ್ತಿ ಸಿಕ್ಕಿದ್ದು, ಜಾಗತಿಕ ಬಡತನವನ್ನು ಹೋಗಲಾಡಿಸುವ ಪ್ರಾಯೋಗಿಕ ವಿಧಾನ ಮಂಡಿಸಿದ್ದಕ್ಕಾಗಿ ಅವರಿಗೆ ಈ ಗೌರವ ಲಭಿಸಿದೆ.
21 ಫೆಬ್ರವರಿ 1961ರಲ್ಲಿ ಕೋಲ್ಕತ್ತಾದಲ್ಲಿ ಜನಸಿರುವ ಬ್ಯಾನರ್ಜಿ ವ್ಯಾಸಂಗ ಮಾಡಿದ್ದು ಭಾರತದಲ್ಲೇ. ಆರಂಭದ ದಿನಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಪಾಯಿಂಟ್ ಸ್ಕೂಲ್ ಮತ್ತು ಪ್ರೆಸಿಡೆನ್ಸಿ ಕಾಲೇಜ್ನಲ್ಲಿ ವ್ಯಾಸಂಗ ಮಾಡಿದ್ದ ಇವರು, 1981ರಲ್ಲಿ ಕ್ಯಾಲಿಕಟ್ ವಿಶ್ವವಿದ್ಯಾಲಯದ ಪ್ರೆಸಿಡೆನ್ಸಿ ಕಾಲೇಜ್ನಿಂದ ಬಿಎಸ್ಸಿ ಪದವಿ ಪಡೆದುಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತಾರೆ. ತದನಂತರ ಹಾರ್ವರ್ಡ್ ವಿಶ್ವವಿದ್ಯಾಲಯದಿಂದ 1988ರಲ್ಲಿ ಪಿಹೆಚ್ಡಿ ಪಡೆದುಕೊಂಡಿದ್ದು, ಅದಕ್ಕೂ ಮೊದಲು 1983ರಲ್ಲಿ ನವದೆಹಲಿಯ ಜವಾಹರ್ಲಾಲ್ ನೆಹರು ವಿಶ್ವವಿದ್ಯಾಲಯದಿಂದ ಅರ್ಥಶಾಸ್ತ್ರದಲ್ಲಿ ಎಂಎ ಪದವಿ ಪಾಸ್ ಮಾಡಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಅಭಿಜಿತ್ ಬ್ಯಾನರ್ಜಿ ಅವರ ತಂದೆ-ತಾಯಿ ಇಬ್ಬರೂ ಅರ್ಥಶಾಸ್ತ್ರಜ್ಞರೇ ಎಂಬುದು ಗಮನಾರ್ಹ ಸಂಗತಿ.

ಸದ್ಯ ಅಮೆರಿಕ ಮೂಲದ ಎಂಐಟಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಫೋರ್ಡ್ ಪೌಂಡೇಶನ್ ಇಂಟರ್ನ್ಯಾಷನಲ್ ಅರ್ಥಶಾಸ್ತ್ರಜ್ಞ ವಿಭಾಗದ ಪ್ರೊಫೆಸರ್ ಆಗಿ ಸೇವೆ ಸಲ್ಲಿಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದಾರೆ. 2016ರಲ್ಲಿ ಪ್ರಧಾನಿ ನರೇಂದ್ರ ಮೋದಿ ನೇತೃತ್ವದ ಎನ್ಡಿಎ ಸರ್ಕಾರ ನೋಟ್ ಬ್ಯಾನ್ ಮಾಡಿದ್ದಾಗ ಅದನ್ನು ಬ್ಯಾನರ್ಜಿ ಟೀಕೆ ಸಹ ಮಾಡಿದ್ದರು. ಭಾರತದಲ್ಲಿನ ಡಿಮಾನಿಟೈಸೆಷನ್ ನಿರ್ಧಾರದ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ನನಗೆ ಅರ್ಥವೇ ಆಗಿಲ್ಲ. ಹೊಸ 2000 ರೂ ಮುಖಬೆಲೆಯ ನೋಟು ಜಾರಿಗೆ ತಂದಿರುವ ನಿರ್ಧಾರದ ಹಿಂದಿನ ಉದ್ದೇಶವೇ ನನಗೆ ತಿಳಿದಿಲ್ಲ ಎಂದಿದ್ದರು.
