An initiative towards keeping Bhopal plastic-free
Bhopal: Bhopal Municipal Corporation (BMC) started a unique and inspiring anti-plastic drive in the month of September.
In order to make the city plastic-free, BMC set up cloth- bag sewing kiosks at several places.
At these kiosks, with the help of sewing machines, old clothes are transformed into carrying bags.
People here can buy cloth bags at just Rs 5, which gets refunded if they bring their own old clothes.
Talking to ETV Bharat, Rabia, who works at one of the kiosks said, "We are receiving good response but people are still hesitant in buying these bags."
"But people are making a contribution to the cause, as I'm able to sell 10-15 bags easily on a daily basis. Those who bring old clothes are given carrying bags free of cost," added Rabia.
Reusing and recycling old clothes have in turn reduced plastic waste too in the city.
Last year, Indore was adjudged as India's Cleanest City for the third consecutive year in the central government's cleanliness survey, while Bhopal was named as the ‘Cleanest Capital’ of India.
