Interstate fraudsters (10) of card cloning arrested for playing fraud on ICICI Bank
The Cyber Crime Police, Cyberabad arrested (10) fraudsters from Jharkhand and West Bengal States who verified card numbers through e-wallets / booking application and validates PIN number of bank customers of more than 3,500 through IVR (Interactive Voice Response) and withdrawn huge amounts from ATMs located in different parts of the country. It is one of the biggest cyber crimes happened in recent times and this shows a paradigm shift in the cyber criminal’s fraudulent methods in a doing frauds targeting banks itself instead of individual customers.

Brief facts of the Case:
Brief facts of the case are that, on 26.3.2019 received a complaint from Regional Manager, (Financial Crime Prevention Group), ICICI Bank, Hyderabad that during the month of March, 2019 their toll free customer care call center at Hyderabad (18601207777) had received more than 3 lakh calls on Interactive Voice Response (IVR) platform from various un-registered mobile numbers of bank accounts with a very specific request of balance enquiry by Debit card number and ATM (Automatic Teller Machine) Personal Identification Number [PIN]. During the relevant period more than 900 un-registered mobile numbers were used to inquire into card PIN numbers. Out of the validated cards of more than 3,500, withdrawals were taken place with more than 1,000 cards amounting to the tune of more than 3 Crore rupees. Basing on the above complaint a case is registered at Cyber Crime Police Station, Cyberabad and investigated into.
Background of the offence:
Since 2011-2012 the youth in the districts of Jamtara & Deoghar District of Jharkhand state started cheating the bank customers by calling them in the name of bank officials and collecting their bank account/card credentials and transferring the funds to various mobile wallets.
After introduction of e-wallets fraudsters are transferring the funds to mobile wallets for which limit is Rs.20,000/- for transfer of funds.
After introduction of UPI (Unified Payment Interface) by NPCI, fraudsters generatingRs.20,000/-, as there is no limit for transfer of funds.
Present Modus Operandi of the Accused:
Since few months the fraudsters from Jamtara & Deoghar districts modified their modus operandi to fetch huge amounts by playing fraud on banks instead of targeting individual bank customers.
The fraudsters are verifying the bank debit card numbers through various mobile wallets / booking applications by randomly typing the card number and validating the PIN by calling to the IVR of different banks including ICICI Bank.
After which the fraudsters are preparing cloned cards with the data secured by them and withdrawing amounts from ATM’s located in different states. In this case the fraudsters have withdrawn amounts from West Bengal, Jharkhand, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Haryana, Punjab, Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Tamilnadu, Karnataka and Kerala states.
During the month of March, 2019 the fraudsters have withdrawn amounts more than 3 Crores with cloned cards.
Advisory to Bankers:
The bankers are advised to allow their customers with their registered mobile numbers for contacting customer care service.
Bankers are advised to use multiple factor authentications for interacting with their customer care center for bank account.
Bankers are advised to give access to their mobile applications whoever is having registered mobile number on the device.
Bankers are advised to have full proof software mechanism to detect registered mobile bank customers, repeated fraud callers, to block un-registered mobile numbers etc., to avoid frauds.
Appeal to General Public:
Public are advised not to store or save credit/debit card information in any Apps or website since there is every probability those Apps or website will be compromised and your credentials will be exposed.
Though the modus operandi of these cyber criminals have changed but it is not a complete shift, there are still cases of customers sharing their credit/debit card credentials and also OTP and PIN to the callers who are nothing but cyber fraudsters. So, don’t share any information regarding your bank details (any small information) to anyone over phone or in person.
Also have maximum privacy settings for your social media platform and do not share any personal information to general public other than friends which are exploited by these cyber fraudsters in identifying the passwords.
