APPLEGATE AND CARDELLINI HAVE A FATALLY FUNNY ATTRACTION IN 'DEAD TO ME'
A fatal hit-and-run car accident isn't the most conventional way to set a sitcom in motion.
Then again, "Dead to Me" is anything but conventional.
From creator Liz Feldman ("Hot in Cleveland") and executive producers Adam McKay ("Vice") and Will Ferrell, the series, which debuts Friday (3 MAY) on Netflix, fuses the gallows-humor elements of "Six Feet Under" with the deep psychological-thriller component of "Single White Female" and throws in a dash of "Laverne and Shirley"-styled wackiness, just to lighten things up.
The series spins around the newly widowed Jen (Christina Applegate) and Judy (Linda Cardellini), who meet at a grief group, and couldn't be more different.
Jen is an ice queen. Judy is all touchy-feely.
"So, of course, they would become best friends," noted Applegate, with a laugh.
Soon, they're finding solace together in the most unexpected places -- such as watching late-night reruns of the 1979-88 sitcom "The Facts of Life" and getting into hilarious debates over which of them is most like specific characters on the series.
"I think it speaks about the grief, too," observed Cardellini ("Green Book"). "I think the grief and the loss and the fear and the all of that. I think you find a strange, you can find the strangest friends if they're going through the same thing as you are."
Actor James Marsden ("X-Men") is the series' third lead, and, like Applegate and Cardellini, said he was quickly impressed with creator Feldman's fresh blend of genres.
"This is unique and this is very real and it's very honest and, at times, really, really dark," he commented. "And there's still room for humor in there. And it makes you question yourself, like, 'Why should I be laughing at this? Should I not,' you know?'"
Reporters were allowed to watch all 10 episodes that comprise "Dead to Me"'s first season, but reps for Netflix also supplied a laundry list of plot points it requested we not reveal: just for one -- who Marsden portrays. With a story line crammed with secrets and surprises -- and spoilers ruining some viewers' experiences watching the just-released "Avengers: Endgame" -- the streaming service's concern seems justified.
Marsden said keeping spoilers to himself is second nature, after working on the "X-Men" films and the series "Westworld."
Applegate and Cardellini acknowledged, "It's a challenge."
"But we're also really excited about the show," Cardellini added. "I think there's nothing really like it. And I think when we were making it, we were saying, 'What this is. What is this tone?'
