"Russia wants to essentially send a message, not just to Washington and to a degree to Beijing, but also to Seoul, that it is an important player and Russia should be factored in when Korean issues are discussed."

7. SOUNDBITE (English) Dmitri Trenin, Director of the Carnegie Moscow Centre:
"I don't think we're talking successes here, we're talking a process. Again for Russia the issue is to make sure that the situation on the Korean peninsula does not lead either to conflict or to a massive build up of armaments, that's the issue. For Russia the game is not, not about completely denuclearising the Korean peninsula because most people here believe it's a 'mission impossible'. North Korean will not, not give up the only guarantee of the survival of the North Korean state and its regime."

9. SOUNDBITE (English) Dmitri Trenin, Director of the Carnegie Moscow Centre:
"I think he (Putin) will try to steer the North Korean leader towards a productive, constructive dialogue with the United States, promising Russia's support for that trajectory in the relationship. But Russia cannot be expected to side with North Korea and, let's say, support the North Koreans all the way, in the UN Security Council where Russia is a veto- wielding member and where all sanctions imposed on North Korea require Russia's approval. And this is an important card that Mr Putin will be playing."

If we would like to supply a dozen or so of S-400 (air defence missile systems) to North Korea, I think, it will change the whole balance of power in Korea, it's just one example."

STORYLINE:
Russian President Vladimir Putin will meet with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un for a much-anticipated summit on Thursday, a Kremlin adviser said, putting an end to weeks of speculation about when and where it would take place.
Preparations for the meeting in Vladivostok, a Russian city on the Pacific, were held in secrecy because of North Korean security concerns, Kremlin adviser Yuri Ushakov told Russian news agencies on Tuesday.
For Russian President Vladimir Putin, a meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un offers a chance to raise his influence in the region and gain more leverage with Washington.
"Russia wants to essentially send a message… that it is an important player and Russia should be factored in when Korean issues are discussed" says Dmitri Trenin, Director of the Carnegie Moscow Centre.
The main topics on the agenda will be North Korea's nuclear programme, as well as the nations' shared economic interests.
Trenin however does not predict any major breakthroughs from the talks.
"I don't think we're talking successes here, we're talking a process" he says. "For Russia the game is not about completely denuclearising the Korean peninsula because most people here believe it's a mission impossible."
Moscow's involvement comes at a moment when talks between Washington and Pyongyang have been on hold following the failure of US President Donald Trump's summit with Kim in Hanoi.
The breakdown of those talks may mean Kim is going into his meeting with Putin - the first between the two - in need of a win to keep his efforts to break down support for the sanctions that have hindered his economic goals alive.
Georgy Toloraya, former diplomat in North Korea and Korea expert, says that Russia's leverage with North Korea is often underestimated.
"We have (leverage), we don't use it. If we would like to supply a dozen or so of S-400 (air defense missile systems) to North Korea, I think, it will change the whole balance of power in Korea, it's just one example."
Kim, like his father, avoids air travel and is likely to travel by train to Vladivostok, about 675 kilometers (419 miles) south of Pyongyang.
In the meantime, Vladivostok has been seeing a number of unusually strict security measures.
Maritime authorities said Tuesday that the waters around Russky Island, off the southern tip of Vladivostok, would be closed to all maritime traffic between Wednesday morning and Friday morning.
The island is home to a university with a conference hall, and is seen as a likely summit venue.
