STORYLINE:
235 detained rebels from the Sudan Liberation Movement were released from prison in Khartoum on Thursday as part of a trust-building measure aimed at achieving a peace agreement with rebel groups in the Darfur region.
The prisoners came from a particular faction of the SLM, which has many splinter groups.
The movement has been fighting the government since 2003.
Authorities said they would be released immediately unless they were wanted in connection with other legal issues.
"We are celebrating their return to the peaceful national path in our dear country," said Jamal Abdel Rahman, from the ruling Transitional Military Council.
The release was instigated by Ethiopian and African Union negotiators.
